From what I've read there was a disconnect between TA and the state and federal governments.Dave The Man wrote:Tennis Australia looking very Dodgy with them getting Non-Vaccinated people into the Country
Getting Covid can be grounds for a temporary exemption from the vaccine for up to 6 months and that has been applied with the mandatory vaccination orders.
However, having an exemption doesn't make you fully vaccinated and the federal rules on coming into the country is fully vaccinated people are free and unvaccinated people have to do 14 days quarantine. Apparently ATAGI wasn't consulted or involved in the panels that assessed exemptions but did write to TA twice which TA seems to have ignored.
None of this explains why Novax is apparently being deported or how 3 other unvaccinated tennis players were allowed in with exemptions. Absolute clustercluck.

My sister who lives in Eltham knows of 4 or 5 people (including some children) who have been recently infected with COVID since the rise of Omicron and if her experience is being replicated across the state/country then you get the feeling that the reported case numbers are still far lower than the actual number of infected people circulating in the community.
Not sure if anyone on Nick's has declared they have had COVID in the past (not sure why you wouldn't as no stigma should ever be attached) if not then it appears 2022 will finally be the year we break our cherry.

Yet the decision was also approved the Victorian government’s ‘expert’ panel, such experts they apparently didn’t even know the ATAGI rules they were supposed to be applying to the applications.Dave The Man wrote:Tennis Australia looking very Dodgy with them getting Non-Vaccinated people into the Country

Well folks my 23 year old daughter tested positive and was diagnosed with Covid yesterday. She is in isolation at her house in Melbourne. She sounds alright at the moment but I’m checking up on her regularly by phone. Luckily her fabulous housemates are happy for her to remain in her room and are supporting her food wise. Welcome to 2022 and the continued Covid saga.

Am I right to understand that the exemption to play in the tournament itself (TA/state gov) is being confused in the global media with the separate matter of being granted a visa (fed gov)? Everyone who travels knows states and industry bodies do not make visa decisions, even if their sponsorship forms part of the decision-making process.stui magpie wrote:From what I've read there was a disconnect between TA and the state and federal governments.Dave The Man wrote:Tennis Australia looking very Dodgy with them getting Non-Vaccinated people into the Country

I would never in a million years accept the word of anyone other than the federal visa granting authority, let alone during a pandemic. I've travelled and worked overseas a lot, and Djokovic far more than me, so I don’t buy the confusion for a second, unless he really is as thick as an anti-vaxxing plank. More likely someone is trying their luck or trying to force someone else's hand.
That said, suburban school principal Morrison ought to have kept his mouth shut; it has absolutely nothing to do with him at all.

Maybe Dave. If enough people have caught COVID, they will be the free ones and those who haven't would need to isolate.Dave The Man wrote:So the People not had Covid would need to stay away from the Rest of the Population?stui magpie wrote:Before we hit winter it's likely that the people who haven't had Covid will be the odd ones out.

^Dave, vaccine protection has actually been shown to be higher than the natural immunity that comes from catching the virus. But the most important point is that most of the deaths, bad responses and long covid are associated with people who caught the virus before getting vaccinated. So, flippant talk about catching virus now the first lot of people are dead or have long covid, and most of the rest are vaccinated, is very misleading.
It is wrong to think those who have caught covid will be 'free', and those who haven't caught covid will be not be free. The most at-risk people overall are still those who have not been vaccinated and those with weak immune systems due to disease, frailty or medication.
Furthermore, next-generation vaccines are being developed which produce broader jmmune responses. Until covid clearly becomes weaker, this next step in vaccine development will be crucial.
Those who have caught the virus naturally and been vaccinated have the strongest protection, but they're also lucky they didn't have a bad response when they caught covid before being vaccinated.
Most likely, we will continue to combine vaccination with catching the virus naturally until the virus becomes weaker over time. In the meantime, the careless spreading of the virus is causing hospitals and emergency services to be overrun and a shortage of workers, which is another reason why vaccination plus caution is better for everyone, and people crapping on about the virus being 'nothing' are causing mischief.
