We typically see 600 deaths per month in Australia from respiratory related illnesses.

We'll do well to get over the Omicron hurdle before winter and flu season hits.

Think it’s only half a dose, saw something last week where they were talking about getting twice as much out of a vial.

moderna as a booster for most of us is 1/2 dose,
moderna as a third shot for severely immune compromised is a full shot

i had the moderna, im assuming the 1/2 dose, on my certificate the booster has replaced the first dose i had, ie 2 show up the 2nd and third.

It's painful not going to the pub here in winter, that's for sure. I'm cautious given my immune system, so I was surprised to see the numbers of people still well down around town. That said, the Omicron campaign here has rightly focused on keeping infections down for the NHS and vulnerable regardless of Omicron's reduced severity, so maybe that's working.

If we get a month or so after this wave with not much happening, or another short weak strain, things should normalise. Might we dare hope to be free by March/April if nothing much replaces Omicron?

And that 20 deaths, plus the two subequently reported in South Australia, gives Australia its highest weekly total of deaths (123) since 6 September 2020 (yes - 2020, not 2021). For the record, the highest was 155, in the week ending 4 September 2020 - and, for completeness, the total that day (59 deaths) and one a couple of days earlier (41 deaths) were to correct recording errors in deaths over prior weeks/months. Both those "correcting" numbers were included in each of the higher weekly totals than the last week's that have been reported in Australia. Thus it is likely that the last week has been the deadliest COVID week ever in Australia.

There have been 41 new deaths from COVID-19 reported. Four women and three men aged in their 70s, 10 women and seven men aged in their 80s, 13 women and three men aged in their 90s and one woman aged in her 100s.

Today’s deaths total includes 33 people who died in previous weeks but were reported by a number of aged care facilities to the Department of Health and Human Services in the past 24 hours. Eight of the new deaths in Victoria occurred yesterday. The retrospective reports today were due to amended reporting obligations for aged care facilities.

There have been 59 new deaths from COVID-19 reported since yesterday. Today’s reported deaths include 50 people from Victorian aged care facilities who died in July and August.

- 88 on a ventilator.

Each of those figures has been the subject of a progressive daily increase since 31 December 2021. So, in 10 days, hospitalizations with COVID are up 242%, intensive care is up 254% and the number of people on ventilators is up 215%.

On boosters:

Moderna chief executive officer Stephane Bancel said another round of vaccine boosters against Covid-19 will probably be needed this autumn, even if immunity to the rapidly spreading Omicron variant becomes widespread.

“Assuming Omicron is an acceleration to the endemic phase, I still believe we’re going to need boosters in the fall of ‘22 and forward,” Mr Bancel said in a presentation. However, boosters given this month or in the last quarter of 2021 will probably hold until spring begins in the northern hemisphere, he said.
