The main reason McGowan has been playing tough on Covid is their public health system is 3rd world. Rather than spend all his mining billions on fixing it, it's easier to throw blame and play tough with isolationist policies, which have worked.

^ The WA strategy has worked very well. On the day Delta arrived at Bondi (16 June 2021), WA had under 4% of its population aged 12+ double-vaxxed. As of yesterday, the figure was over 85% and it is expected that 90% of the population of WA will be double-vaxxed in 10 days' time. In the meantime, no-one has died of COVID in WA in more than 8 months (and just 9 people have died in total) and business and economic actiovity there seems to be largely unaffected.

I attended a VCOSS Coronavirus briefing session this morning with reps from DFFH and Commander Covid as speakers.
A couple of things that stood out was it was all pretty calm.
Current daily (recorded) cases are more than we had for the whole of 2020, but aren't increasing. Inference was they think they've plateaued.
As of today they said there was over 240,000 active (recorded) cases in Victoria and 1300* people in Hospital, many of whom aren't there because of Covid (eg, broken arm) but were tested and diagnosed on admission.
While they are doing very little contact tracing at the moment (numbers far to high) QR code checkins are still recommended as they still use the info for mass infection sites.
RAT's are only being mandated in very limited areas and will be supplied to employers by the government in those situations. If you test positive, you're free to leave isolation after 7 days, you don't need a negative test.
It was said a few times that Vaccination is the way out, plus people being sensible, wearing masks, social distancing etc.
* While Commander Covid quoted 1300 people in hospital the daily published numbers are only 1152, so I'll assume the difference is those people still in hospital with post Covid complications but who are no longer positive.

The 1,152 is cumulative admissions since the start of the pandemic so the actual in hospital must be less than that. The 1,300 doesn't make sense either unless all the numbers are just wrong.stui magpie wrote:

If we assume (wrongly) that everyone admitted before 1 Jan has been discharged, then we would have 700 people in hospital.

Nah, it's not cumulative as it goes up and down, it's the number of people currently in Hospital positive with Covid, today, whether they're being treated for Covid or something else.

Vic stopped reporting people in ICU who no longer had Covid but were there because of Covid caused health issues. Numbers in Hospital today are 77 less than yesterday, so that would mean 77 more people were discharged (or died) than were admitted.

and now I hear a story of someone who called an ambulance claiming they were having heart / chest pain, only to get rushed to ED with prioritized treatment, to then tell the doctors & nurses they didn't really have chest pain, they just needed a PCR and wanted it to be done / get it back quickly!
I can't fathom the selfishness of some people!
You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either!
