What's going on in Putins head

"It's not about Russia. It's about Putin … and this small circle of people around him who dominate this country," Mark Galeotti, an expert on Russian security affairs, told Vox.

"This is a view of a bunch of old men who can't quite get over the fact that they're no longer running a superpower."

Mr Putin appears to be motivated by three main factors: a passionate belief in Russian supremacy, a fear of rising Western influence on his doorstep, and an inability to resist a high-stakes gamble against seemingly impossible odds.

It's also hard to see the average person relishing war on close neighbours and in many cases family, whatever the propaganda.

The obvious response is to use this to press forward with boosting alternative energy production and unwinding of fossil fuels positions. Germany and Greece, among others, are making moves on this right now. There can also be no internal Russian reform without this happening, although the worry is it might cause Putin to get even flakier. But there's no choice now.

I see Putin’s best buddy,Trump,has come out in support of his invasion of Ukraine,saying it was a ‘ genius move’.The comments are weird to say the least,but not surprising.Russia under Putin is a kleptocracy ruled by oligarchs,criminals,thieves and despots.The perfect role model for Trump’s America.No wonder he likes Putin so much.

If Putin is successful in seizing Ukraine, I think Latvia and Estonia will be next as these countries have a sizeable ethnic Russian population.

China's focus will be on Taiwan.

NATO states won't go into Ukraine. They'll only provide weapons and non-military aid to the Ukrainians.
