He skewered so many people in a rolling evisceration that no one wanted to be the first one to look like a sook, so they all just took it.
If one had of got up and tried to take a swing, you can guarantee that others would have been ready to queue up, but Gervais would have spent the next 10 minutes utterly slaughtering the person who took the swing.
Chris Rock could have done that but was likely too shocked by what happened and wisely chose the classy path.
