What?

Roughead just retired & we need to keep Madgen out, great if Kelly could remain fit and gain some confidence.
Charlie Dean and Murphy have that covered I think.

Tornado Spuds van on the wing is the hottest thing on the ground, ordinary conditions.
Cal Browns qtr, just worked in and under the packs. Real shame, he's clearly a leader in the VFL, but not quite up to AFL level for a player with his physical attributes and skill level.

17. Callum Brown 24 disposals, 9 tackles, 6 clearances, 5 inside 50's (our best, really good game)
24. Caleb Poulter 19 disposals, 2 tackles, 2 clearances (does not possess AFL quality disposal efficiency)
45. Josh Carmichael 16 disposals 9 tackles, 2 clearance (working into the game)
29. Liam McMahon 15 disposals 1 tackle
18. Fin Macrae 13 disposals 10 tackles, 2 clearances (doesn't like wet weather footy)
20. Will Kelly 12 disposals 1 tackle
8. Trent Bianco 12 disposals 5 tackles
27. Cooper Murley 106 disposals 2 tackle, 1 clearance, 5 inside 50's (built like an arrowroot biscuit but has some skills)
39. Aiden Begg 9 disposals 5 tackles, 12 hit-outs, 3 clearances
34. Isaac Chugg 4 disposals 2 tackles, 1 clearance
36. Harvey Harrison 4 disposals, 2 tackles
40. Ash Johnson 3 disposals, 1 tackle (has a young Chris Tarrant vibe, great lead and leap)

Love the updates and assessment Laurie, but I'm surprised you didn't Murley the best over Browny after getting that many touches ;)
In the end, it's not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away

It’s got me mystified why Callum Brown isn’t an AFL regular player. He’s clearly above this level. Despite the score board MaCrae, Poulter, Begg, Kelly and McMahon are developing very nicely at this level and are about a year away from being regular AFL players. Ash Johnson is rusty after a long lay off and Carmichael shows promise as that in and under player we’re lacking, but he’ll need the remainder of VFL season to home in his game. Our biggest list issue at the moment is the lack of tall forwards capable of kicking bagfuls of goals and we have no one coming through at VFL level who can help out. That’s why I’d be having a very serious look at Sam Weiderman. He’s surplus to needs at Melbourne. He hasn’t done much today. However he fits our age profile and he wouldn’t cost us an arm and a leg.

Ben Croker always looked better than VFL and then looked about a second to slow (reaction time) for AFL.
Perhaps Brown is the same but, then, I often think his problem lies between his ears.

Dean has never played at this level & Murphy like Kelly is injury prone, not exactly adequate coverage.

Shouldn’t Dean play at least a game before you lock him into a best 18 senior position??

Tornado Spuds van on the wing was the hottest thing at the ground, ordinary conditions.

17. Cal Brown was clearly our best, just worked in and under the packs all day. Real shame, he's clearly at the top of VFL standard, but not quite up to AFL level given his physical attributes and skill level, he's just off the mark.

17. Callum Brown 32 disposals, 12 tackles, 6 clearances, 6 inside 50's (our best, really good game, tried his guts out all day)
24. Caleb Poulter 25 disposals, 2 tackles, 2 clearances, 3 inside 50's (does not possess AFL quality disposal efficiency, I'm not convinced he'll make it and it hasn't just been this game, needs a kick up the arse)
45. Josh Carmichael 16 disposals 9 tackles, 2 clearances, 2 inside 50's (worked into the game, like Johnson, needs a body of games in the VFL before any consideration to making a debut)
29. Liam McMahon 18 disposals 1 tackle (probably not the conditions for him, will need another season in the VFL and some wise heads around him)
18. Fin Macrae 13 disposals 10 tackles, 2 clearances (doesn't like wet weather footy, needs to buy into this VFL program and work harder)
20. Will Kelly 16 disposals 2 tackles (made a couple of telling clangers that resulted in two goals but the rest of his game was serviceable. He's worth persevering for another season)
8. Trent Bianco 17 disposals 6 tackles, 5 inside 50's (from this years body of work, nothing to suggest we'll see him play senior football again)
27. Cooper Murley 11 disposals 2 tackle, 1 clearance, 5 inside 50's (built like an arrowroot biscuit but has some skills)
39. Aiden Begg 12 disposals 7 tackles, 15 hit-outs, 3 clearances, 2 inside 50's (solid enough game but might have run out of puff, lack of key position personnel hasn't helped, he's going to play senior football again though, no doubt)
34. Isaac Chugg 8 disposals 6 tackles, 1 clearance (apart from taking what might be mark of the year, didn't really feature)
36. Harvey Harrison 6 disposals, 4 tackles, 1 clearance (pretty insipid effort)
40. Ash Johnson 3 disposals, 2 tackles (has a young Chris Tarrant vibe, great lead and leap but a body of VFL games required to get anywhere near match fitness and work into our playing style patterns in order to have a chance of a debut)

We lacked good big men today, particularly against such a cohesive unit that Casey exhibited. Without Dean, Murphy, Cox , we seemed to lack key targets up front and reliable defenders. 26. McInness and 6. T Brown clearly left the midfield underdone. Those two along with Cal would have made a huge difference.
Our own supporters need a reality check for the few that thought Johnson could debut after a lay-off. He's got a touch of the young Chris Tarrants about him though, has a hard lead and beautiful natural leap.
Kelly won't be promoted anytime soon. Not a bad game so far, but a way off senior selection. Worth persevering with into 2023.
Macrae hardly setting the world on fire but showing some endeavour. He's a 2023 story.
Carmichael we'll see how he develops over the next few weeks, give him time to get to know some of his team mates and new surrounds.
Finally, any romantic notion of Weideman coming to Collingwood and wearing the b&w should stay at that, he doesn't have what we need.

All in all, a tough day against the ladder leaders, although it was over in the first quarter where they kicked truly to register 6.2 and led by 52 at half time.
The second half we drew even, scoring 25 apiece so the 52 point end margin reflected an even effort in the 2nd half which while not pretty football, was pleasing.

Vfl has really dropped off. Not much depth on this list which we know.

I don't get all and sundry talking about Dean as the savior. Rookie pick who has never played a game. Baffling.

We're simply paper thin for depth. Really think we have to grab a few 29-31 y/o UFA / retiring types from some other clubs at seasons end.
Look it's a fine balance, but we need experience on the ground to assist these kids coming through.
Missed Jetta out there today.

Jetta is great when he plays.
In the games I have seen live, he is always coaching and directing traffic in the backline.

The VFL also struggles with consistency in the team, about 3 or 4 changes each week.

The Pies slide down the ladder continues. Now 8th and % has taken a hit in the last couple of rounds.

Next up is another Bye then Brisbane at AIA centre on Saturday 25 June.

Our depth is fine. Conditions didn’t suit today and Casey haven’t been beaten all season. And Weideman is exactly the sort of player we need at our club.

I never said locked, nor did I describe him as the savior. Our defence does not need 'saving' in any case!

But having two tall defenders as backups is pretty sufficient IMO. Plus you've got McMahon. Would be good if one of them could move forward.
