Putting the church cover-ups and abuse allegations to one side, why would he even be publicly commemorated to begin with (the implication being that he would have been given a state funeral otherwise)? What, precisely, did he contribute to society apart from being a very high-ranking Catholic? His church and its congregants can commemorate him as they please, of course, but I’m not sure why secular society should give a toss about him.

For too long we’ve had a habit of honouring the famous and powerful simply for being famous and powerful. Hopefully that’s beginning to change.

^ He’s some writer Guy Rundle. Don’t always agree with him and at times I want to say “cut the cackle” as was used once by an English lecturer’s notes to a friend’s undergraduate essay but this was pretty good. He has a Helen Razor way with words at times.
