I watched a couple of quarters, general observations.

I like the look of Ryan and Allan, Steene has a lot to work with

mcCrae and Bianco did some nice things, as did the little schoolteacher bloke.

Ash needs to get his transmission serviced, it's stuck in 2nd gear. He ain't going to get a look in at AFL level if he plays like that, regardless of the goals.

Will Kelly will make a very good CHF - for Mansfield. I don't think he's up to VFL level.

12 of our AFL listed players were part of a first up win for our VFL boys and new coach Josh Fraser in blustery conditions at our spiritual home.
Coburg didn't do themselves any favours though with some errant kicking for goal flattering our end result.
Plenty of high possession, fast ball movement, reflective of the AFL senior side.

Macrae, the B&F winner picked up wherre he left off last year, simply too good for this level. He wins his own ball and creates opportunity, exactly what we want to see from this emerging midfielder. Noticebly keeps his feet well in the contest, and is a strong runner. He looks ready to go, and claim his senior spot.

Ruscoe was serviceable, his clean kicking ability saw him take a number of the kick-ins.

Ash Johnson, another too good for this level. Only thing stopping him, is well himself. If Fly and Co can get him to engage and connect above the shoulders, he could deliver some seriously good football, and as a type of player we don't currently possess as a regular starter in the AFL side.

Tom Wilson had a good day out, in what were tough conditons for a forward. He clearly has class, just not sure where he fits in at this stage. I could see him as a HB flanker, has a nice natural leap and doesn't panic with the ball.

Steene performed well. Showed in parts why we were keen to get him, contests well. And importantly, at 6'7 appears to know how to play as a big man, gets his body into the right positions, contests hard and can mark the footy cleanly. He'll take time to develop, but will provide some handy depth for us this year.

Richards showed nice ball use and moved well, he's a get and go type player, creates opportunities. I suspect that'll boe well with Fly's coaching style.

Ed Allen, presented well. Good mover and wins his own ball. He'll continue to learn his craft over the 1st half of this season, and might be a chance at a 2nd half of the year debut. The sooner we can get him to glean the experience of the likes of Pendles, WHE and Howe, the better. Looms as a midfielder

Kelly struggled down back and when up forward, but also played wing.
From what I've seen, not much has changed from last year / pre-season. He dropped marks, and was noticeable in not demanding the football. He's slow to get anywhere near the play. Similar to Tyler Brown, he just hangs back off the play and doesn't impact games.
If he can't compete and influence at this level (and Coburg weren't that good), I can't see him staying on the list.

Jakob Ryan seemingly plays with maturity. Played a solid role off the HBF, showing defensive nous and dash. He's another that'll get his chance this year.

The addition of VFL Wilson was a good decision, like Jetta, his experience will come in very handy through the season.

The AFL listed players whom I felt showed enough to be in contention for selection against the Tigers : Macrae & Johnson.
While he rounds out his fitness and defensive game, Johnson looms as an ideal 'special teams' Super Sub.
Macrae is a Centre in waiting.
