A matter of Stats : Collingwood team & player statistics

I am pretty sure we are smothering kicks a lot more this year - anyone know where someone collects these stats and has comparisons with previous years?

They’re commonly lumped under “1%ers” along with knock-ons, spoils and shepherds. Might need to have a stats subscription like Champion to get a breakdown - maybe Pies2016 can help

A little different but was great to see Checkers sprinting after McReery (I think in 3q) to put a shepherd on which gave just that but more space to mail the kick inside 50.

A bugbear of mine with the modern game for a long time.

But yes, pleasingly, we appear to be shepherding more under McRae. Even in contested 2 on 1 or 2 situations, one will help out the other by getting his arms out, whereas in the recent past he would shag off for the outlet handball.

Thought I would throw up an update on an earlier stats summary I posted.

The table shows the average player rating as of Rd 18, compared to a players output in an individual game. Fairly or otherwise, the numbers in the table are therefore an indication of wether youplayed an above average or below average game. We know this could be for a range of reasons including injury, being subbed off or perhaps just having a stinker. Obviously a run of games above average will lift your average, making it harder to perform "above average" in future. The opposite is also true.

Remember its not how good you are compared to everyone else, but an assessment of how your last game was compared to yourself.

Updating for the last couple of months a couple things grab me:
-Elliott, Markov and Quaynor all in good form (which we can confirm with the eye test)
-Lipinski and Howe havent quite been able to produce the stats to support their averages in the last couple weeks (make of that what you will)
-Of the 17 games Murph has played this year, he has returned a rating above his average on 13 of those occasions. Would this make him "most improved"? Second behind him are Moore and Nick Daicos who have 'outperformed' against their average 12 times.
-Of our top 5 rated players, we have only missed 5 games through injury or suspension. Jordy 1x injury, 3 x suspended, Pendles x 1 with the lurgy
-If we broaden this to top 10, we have another 19 games missed, with 12 of these Lipinski.

Elliot has been sensational since the bye. he's kicked 15.3 in those 4 games compared to 11.12 in the 11 games prior to the bye.

Good to see Ash Johnsons recent numbers in the green. I think he's essential to us winning finals. If he, along with Elliot can kick 3 or 4 each (like they have the last 2) we won't be losing too many.

Thanks. I quite like this table. As said, it’s generally a reflection of what the eyes see anyway. Markovs rise as a player is the standout and apparently the club is in discussions on a contract discussion.
On face value, Pendles output is a bit down by his lofty standards but I’d suggest this is as much about preparing him for Sept 2023 and beyond. Being in your mid thirties wouldn’t help either.
Ive always put more stocks in players who play well against good opposition. We haven’t played against much quality since the bye but that’s about to change with the next few weeks block of games. It will be interesting to see that table at the completion of the home and aways.

Here's an update. Apologies for the quality - severely limited by the file size restrictions. Also had to clip out earlier rounds.
My observations:
Nick's output since Port backs up some of the commentary about injury/fatigue and also corresponds with our team form
Mitchell and Lipinski have a sustained trend below their average statistical output
Jordy has been very consistent (compared to his rating - which happens to be the highest average of anyone in the team)
Adams, Checkers hasn't contributed much in the last fortnight
Murphy's injury likely contributed to the break in his run of good performances
Josh Daicos has been a little off - too much time sticking up for little bro? More likely a function of us getting beaten at contest...

Just mulling over a few stat's ahead of opening round.
*Patrick Lipinski led our goal assists in 2022 with an average of 0.88, 16th in the comp.
Over his injury interrupted 2023, in 14 games he averaged 0.57.
His career average is 0.77 per game.
*Pendlegoat was 2nd most effective in goal assists over 2023, with 0.72.
There was a good one in the GF in case anyone missed it.
His career average is 0.75 per game.
*Interestingly, Taylor Adams topped our goal assists over 2023 with 1.09, 4th in the league.
His career average is 0.66 per game.
*Lachie Schultz chimed in with 0.74 over 2023, 37th in the league (using a 15-game minimum).
His career average is 0.56 per game.

While stat's are just that, it does highlight Lipinski's role as a link player. Over 2022 he was ranked 77th in the league for disposal average at 22.04 per game.
He's hoping that 2022 form is a better indication of what we'll get from him over 2024.
