The only way I see Melbourne having any motivation to beat Sydney would be for Brisbane/Port to both lose so they claim 2nd or those two teams both win and a victory wouldn't see them shifting from 4th.

Melbourne have the advantage of seeing how these other two games play out, and can from there plan a win/loss strategy accordingly.
Obviously they will do whatever it takes to schedule an MCG QF....
