Murphy's Law / concussion discussion

Post by Mr Miyagi »

Any updates on Murph? Last we heard the AFL’s concussion panel was deciding whether he should retire or can play on. I’m hoping the best for Murph regardless of their decision.

^indeed. What's the latest? You wouldn't bank on making a granny without him. A super lockdown defender, but you can't double-guess a bloke for wanting to stay conscious and healthy.

You have my support and admiration either way, Murph.

Agreed Mr M - for me personally I worry that he has already had enough concussions to put him in the 'at risk' category.

If that's the case and the medico's insist on his immediate retirement I will miss his courage and competitiveness in the backline but hope he has a long and full life after football.

I really do think he is - at best - 1 further concussion off forced retirement.

^Thanks again for the on-the-ball update, Laurie. You feel for the lad given his impressively steady rise as a courageous defensive stalwart. Hopefully, the medical analysis is improving such that a relatively precise assessment is made. He's done so incredibly well thus far, and yet you reckon he might have still further progress in him. Such a courageous lad.

Potentially a huge story and any progress and updates are deserved of its own thread.
Even if Murph is cleared of any recommendation of a premature retirement, he has a big decision to make. We can only hope he isn’t “ forced “ into a difficult outcome on the back of any findings.

May as well wear an easter bonnet - no headwear protects against concussion.

Correct. The helmet protects the skull but doesn't reduce the impact of the hit, the brain still bounces of the inside of the skull.

What I don't understand is that there already exists energy absorbing foam products, used in innersoles and other things that could be used to make a helmet that dramatically reduces the amount of force applied to the brain. Why has no-one made a purpose designed helmet from that kind of material?

A helmet did not do much for Angus Brayshaw.

The cumulative effect of his many concussions.

Might not seem a big deal at this stage but if they get it wrong the effect on his and his loved ones lives 20 years down the track is utter devastation.

So yeah it's a thing.
