I understand the reasons given for taking who we took, namely that the two fall within the requirements of our game plan. However you need key forwards to win matches. Johnson isn't a key forward. Mihocek is 31 years old. If Begg or Kreuger don't come up next year we are in big trouble of defending our premiership. This need not have happened.
I doubt any 18 year old would break into the side as a key forward in 2024.
No real loss McStay I would say would not have featured much in our forward line much and another that would be competing for spots
Bad he go injured tho
We should have never trained at vic park anyway
We have always got the gym at AIA and goshes paddock
First real stuff up of the off season since winning the premiership
I would have liked us to pick up a forward in the draft
But we didn’t
McStay still isn’t a premiership player either don’t forget we won it with out him
Good to see him retire now
Huge loss. We don’t have anyone with either his physical attributes, smarts or endurance to play as a high key forward ( Miochek aside who would have been playing along side him ). The only “ positive “ in all this is that we still have four months to prepare the team without him. We have spots available but any replacement won’t be McStay or they would be on a list already.
You never know what’s around the corner.
Gary Player “ the harder I practice, the luckier I get “
Echoing Pies2016, the only +ve is the timing. Mcinnes, Johnson and Kreuger can stake their claim over the pre-season.
Without McStay it removes the ability to finally get the twin big bodied focal point we could have established in order to present some variation on the 2023 structure.
It's the only focussed trade acquisition we haven't seen applied in ernest.
The Club undoubtedly will support his recovery, but given he'll be on the cusp of 30 by the time he returns, if indeed the other forwards develop as preferred option, McStay does offer versatility to be molded into a full back.

2023 AFL Premiers
from the train on list none of Bytel, Hustwaite, Sofrinidis, Eyre or Bryn Teakle have the craft to replace McStay in 2024. Eyre the size but is a KPD for all we've seen. Is Teakle a Ruck FWD or FWD Ruck I don't know, has one good highlight from Port but hasn't dazzled as a CHF or FF at any level.
Kreuger the only one on our current list with mature KPF body despite his fragility.
Begg has the size and put on some muscle but needs a lot of improvement as a KPF.
Steene has the height but is still a light weight body and easy to move.
Johnson and McInnes are playing for the same role - medium forward / third tall
Charlie Dean not even on the park yet but looks another KPD only.
Can see the Pies opening up another spot with McStay placed on the long term injury list. Who could that be? Do they repick Kelly and nab an extra one of the 5 train on players?
I'm still keen for a another KPF to put pressure on Kreuger, why can't we trial that ex GC delisted fwd Brodie McLaughlin who just signed with Williamstown. Kicked 51 goals in the VFL last year surely that deserves a look?
According to SEN the Pies will trial some more players post xmas break anyway before we take our SSP picks
Ed Allen kicked our last goal of the year at the 58minute mark of the last quarter
More p!ssed off at the wad of cap space cash we've seemingly now thrown down the drain for 2+ years. We're now essentially playing a good-to-star quality player short with 600-700K of cap space doing nothing. The league must find a way to introduce non-fully-guaranteed contracts in such circumstances (e.g. games played comes into account). 30+ years old now coming back from two knee injuries? No disrespect to him, but this is an age and fitness thing now ... he's not worth more than 400K when(if) he returns in 2025 with age, injury and missed games taken into account.
Really devastated. He is a huge loss. And he must be suffering, having missed the GF through injury and now 2024 as well. I hope our coaches can come up with a plan to compensate for this loss. They proved time and again last year that they have the capacity to find a way whatever cruel fate flings in our direction.
Big loss, but as others have said at least the timing works. We can plan all preseason for not having him, train up others and work out what our plan A, B and C are.
I'd like to see Begg trained up as a bash and crash forward to do the same job as McStay.
