He finally performed a useful role and even I accepted that he'd found a niche as a high hf in a top-class AFL team - it made his decision to leave even weirder.

Thanks for this jezza made interesting reading

Here’s a question there’s only 2 of our starting GF side that didn’t feature in any of the top 5 place getters in any of the stats quoted by Jezza
Can you figure out who they are ?
Markov and Ginni

qldmagpie67 wrote:A third of the season sone and only 4 players who have started 6 or more games are yet to receive an AFLCA coaches vote

Bobby Hill - unlucky not to get a vote the day he handed out goal assists like they hand out water bottles during a marathon
Beau McCreery - hasn’t had an impact on games yet but his pressure up forward has been instrumental in some of our wins.
Mason Cox - has been below par most of the season. If we had a realistic second ruck option he likely wouldn’t be in the side
Steele Sidebottom - running between the arcs but basically all he’s doing is putting more miles into tired legs. Has yet to have a impact in a game this season
Off the back of the discussion re AFLCA votes, we can also blend in AFL Player Statistics - Last 5 matches. https://www.wheeloratings.com/afl_stats.html?year=-1

While Cox and Sidey stat's are well off their peak playing days, they remain more of a known quantity, and we simply haven't produced viable replacements, so it is what it is.
Harrison looms as one that Sidey can pass the baton to, but Harrison hasn't been close to showing us a body of work that would force an ageing champion like Sidey from the side.
Cox, I suspect once McStay comes available, will have played his last game. Until then, and with the injuries of Steene in particular, he'll continue to grab a spot.

Just as much of a concern, perhaps more so for me has been the output of Isaac Quaynor. He's a mile off where we expected him to be. He more than anyone for his experience needs to start finding the ball and impacting matches. If I was an opposition coach, on YTD form he'd present no match-up concern.
The euphoria of a win, particularly against the arch enemy can afford a player to hide in the corners. I'd love to know what the internal view is of IQ is atm, but his statistical output and his on-field presence is not best 22 standard to-date, albeit perhaps reflecting out true list depth, hence why the veterans continue to hold their spots.
Of those as QM67 points out, Bobby Hill might have grabbed some AFLCA votes, but he's been playing on GF fumes to date. He really needs to find form again, because 10 goals for a forward of his skill set isn't an output I'd expect the Club would be satisfied with. That's one more goal than Schultz whom plenty are calling for a spell in the magoos.
I don't know whether it's more about structure of our forward line, i.e. not having Mihocek and McStay, but he's also well off from where his talent should have him at.
Finally, McCreery. His core DNA to date has been pressure acts. Defensive forward is one thing, but he really needs to start hitting the scoreboard, otherwise I'd be shifting him to a new role in 2025, and that'll be off a HBF. Maybe we can get Julie in his ear to get him focussed.

In summary, if Quaynor, Hill and McCreery take that form into the business end of the season, it'll be a real concern.

Thought I would add "performance vs expected" chart for the season so far... (note last column is season avg)

Some observations:
- rookies overrepresented because of a small sample size - but the output in absolute terms is impressive for Richards and Sullivan (probably helps they've played on ball)
- Jordy was stinking it up. Was there an underlying injury which has finally resulted in him not playing/resting?
- given the "expected ratings" take into account past performances, Nick is exceeding even his own high standards
- the eye test tells me Darcy Cameron is going better than these stats suggest this season
- Lipinski playing above himself so far
- Steele, Cox, Quaynor all playing below their expected output (which is probably matching what were seeing qualitatively
-not many positive numbers in the first couple rounds (a lot of players output below their expectations

Separately, the top handful of performances (in absolute statistical terms) have gone to:
- Nick (Rd 0, 6, 7, eight) - all greater than 22.4, the best being Rd 6 vs Port @ 26.9
- Lipinski (Rd 2 - 22.4)
- Pendles (Rd 9, 21.2)
- Hosko v Port was 15.4 (4th highest that game behind Nick, Lipinski and Jordy)
- FYI the single best game in the comp so far this season has been Bont (31.9) vs Hawks in Rd 8 (when they lost).

Interesting that on AFL 360 tonight Montana said that was Sidey’s highest rated game for past 70 games.
He highlighted how his footy brain reading play made up for loss of leg speed and how it freed up Markov Noble to play more free and Nick and Crisp to play midfield only.
Could this be a new lease of life and allow us to try adding some more speed to the wing in a Harrison or alike ?
They also highlighted how Rankin is the 3rd highest rated player in the game over the past 6 weeks using his speed from contests even when starting in the midfield

I do think playing Sidey off half back might also help create more midfield/wing time for the next crop. Not to mention getting Crisp in the middle/on the ball more.
