This is sad, but I genuinely can't understand how 2 adults could be so inept in water that they could drown in a hotel swimming pool.

Even if you have NFI, you only need to go 2-3 metres to get to the edge or shallower water.

Apparently they jumped in fully clothed, which would have weighed them down.

If you are not familiar around water, panic can set in and you take in water and/sink.

What I don't understand is why they were anywhere near a pool, in the evening with a toddler, if none of them could swim. The news report I saw showed a sign at the entry to the pool with warnings/rules, particularly that no lifeguard on duty after 7pm which is when the drownings occurred.

It's quite bizarre and whilst I struggle with why they drowned we have to understand that most of us have been brought up in or around the water. We are surrounded by it and education in water starts early for most of us. With the recent Apollo Bay drownings we need to educate those coming in as this happens every year.

Approx 15 years ago I was at Sorrento back beach and a Bus pulled up full of Chinese Tourists and they all ran into the water. Here's me screaming at them to get out but alas I was just some idiot that they couldn't understand. Now this wasn't patrolled as the season was over. The result was a massive rescue with Swimmers, Surfers and in the end Police as a few got sucked out by the rip.

I have no idea how we educate those about the dangers but we need to try.

agree, its disgraceful

back when my eldest was about 4 or 5, we were at the pool of a holiday park where my in laws had a cabin. i was sitting fully dressed, her and another girl a little older were in the pool, and an older gentleman, about 65 was with her, but reading the paper. next thing, the other kid is pushing nikki under, i screamed but she didnt let go, i dived in from the side, grabbed one under each arm and came up at the wall on the other side with both kids spluttering. i went damn apeshit at this guy, and he barely flinched. Nikki told me she saw the girl going under and went to help, (i taught her to swim as a baby, she could dog paddle by 18 months old, but we always had a safety vest on her) and i had to tell her, well done but next time, dont.

people are morons. i really dont get how any kid who was born here, or who has bewen here a couple of years cannot swim to save themselves.

I agree stui, how could they not get to the edge? even with panicking.

i remember having to do laps for my survival certificate in the outdoor cold werribee pool fully dressed, it was damn hard! but not impossible

^I learned to swim in the Tocumwal pool round 6 year old. I remember the focus wasn't on being able to break freestyle records but not drown. We had to do pin-drops into the deep end, fully clothed, and tread water until allowed to swim to the side and get out.

By 8 or 9, I'd tell Mum in summer I was going across the road to the river.
"Don't you go in that water" she'd say.
"I won't, Mum" I'd say.

Then I'd go over, swim across the river going with the current to the other side, duck diving under speed boats and skiers as required, then walk upstream 500M and swim back to my starting point, again with the current, walk around til my clothes dried, then go back home.

If you can't swim, stay away from the water until you learn.

I never knew that every child, of every race, bar 1, has to provide proof of vaccination to attend school.
Is that WA only?

Been like that for years.

Both of mine had to have up to vaccinations to enrol in primary school.

That's right, so why do one race of people NOT have to provide proof of vaccination?

There's actually a few other reasons a child can be exempt from vaccination in WA schools, but the first is purely if - The child is of aboriginal or TI decent. I can't understand how one race of people can be exempt for no other reason than their race?
