2025 Academy and father-son bidding points system

Post by LaurieHolden »

SIGNIFICANT changes to the Academy and father-son bidding points system will be introduced in 2025, after the AFL decided against bringing it in for this year.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/1185295/dra ... -to-change

The new DVI will make it harder for clubs to stockpile draft selections to match multiple bids on Academy and father-son selections.
So it'll be fascinating watch to see how we manage our 2025 1st pick in this year's Draft.
I hope Wright as a parting gift assisted in orchestrating several scenarios for Leppitsch to utilise.

Re Thomas McGuane, I can't find any footage of him using his right foot.
While I'd love another lefty in the side (rarely get a bad kick), despite his obvious evasive skills, without the balance of a right foot he becomes a one sided player. Depending on the 2025 crop, that could we'll push him out of R1 contention. @Pies2016 @Jen2310 thoughts?

I'd be shocked if Mick allowed Tom to grow up one sided...feet I mean, not team.

Apparently, he’s already in top five contention, so that will all be factored into his dual sidedness or not. Nearly all kids have a preferred foot, so it’s not really a big deal. Sometimes people confuse a player being one sided with the ability for him to find time to always get on his preferred foot anyway.
The club will know where he sits in the 2025 draft order ( as best they can ) and they will be planning for it during this trade period as well.
The new rules don’t help but the club will get it done.

Not sure. Talk is that he is a left footer, but I imagine he would be able to kick on both feet. I should ask him.

update:
He tells me he prides himself on kicking on both feet.

Last round of the season -
#7 Thomas McGuane
Midfielder/Forward | 177cm | 27/08/2007

Stats: 28 disposals, 7 marks, 1 goal

The bottom-aged Collingwood father-son prospect did plenty to excite Pies fans heading into 2025, racking up 28 disposals whilst competing well against the talented Dragons on-ball brigade, never looking intimidated by the size he occasionally gave up. The classy left-footer covered the ground extremely well to rack up possessions, getting himself in to spots that allowed his teammates to utilise him without it being a risky disposal option. McGuane was smart with his disposal, picking out good options when in space and looking to hand off to runners when caught in congestion.

2027 NGA prospect, Eli Kravic came 2nd in the U15 Division 1 YJFL Best and Fairest yesterday morning.
Just one vote off the winner, which was his opponent in the GF, Daniel Bulllock (from Hawthorn Citz)

Curious how Toby McMullin's career at GWS will go. Dad Ian played only 25 games for the Pies. Maybe without all the injuries coulda played 75 more?

Looks like Toby is pretty athletic. e.g. 2.88s for 20m sprint at Combine in his draft year.

So we have a list. I think it's a little outdated. This might be last years list. As the U15 NGA's that played in the diversity game and the NGA games this year aren't named. But for now, we have some names. Some I feel are name only. Others I don't think are even playing footy anymore, at least according to PlayhQ

Sexena, what a name.
And another Hrysoulakis! Athas could have been anything of he was willing to train and put in the hard work.

^ @Jen2310 this might fill a few gaps in that academy photo you shared a few months back.

Max Christian was named in the VFL for one game this year if I recall correctly. Luke Quaynor and Tadgh McCarthy playing for Oakleigh Chargers and in this years draft. Tom McGuane Western Jets, Oscar Lonie for Dandenong Stingrays and Zac McCarthy for Oakleigh Chargers all for 2025 draft.

You never know this lot may be a chance. The draft guru indicates we've taken more draft picks and trades than any other club in the AFL over the journey so far.

Think you're talking about his older half-brother, Nicky; who is on our VFL list.
Max is in U16 this year. Plays for Kew Comets.
