Open Letter on Trading ......
To all those who bag/moan/bleat about lack of trading.
I fully understand why we didnt get Everitt, Misiti whoever. If the other club wants to take us to the cleaners by getting the 'better half'(or better75%) of the the deal, why should we. It aint a game of footy swap cards going on hear. Don't trade for the sake of it. If we picked up Everitt for Buckley...who'd be leading the whiners????
Bad trades are bad business, I could give a flying f-word that we aint got any players in the trading. We got a good bunch of kids. Stick with em.
Rome wasn't rebuilt in a day, and nor will the Pies!!

could not possibly agree with you more. Just think of how the pies players are feeling now, especially all of those who have been mooted as tradeable. I would expect that the faith shown in them will gladly be repaied with interest.
Also look at what was actually traded and in the end you can understand why we did not trade.... Most of what moved was shit and the three reasonable tradees were overvalued (croad for pick one and two round twos, Black on $330k, porter for McKernan), we would have had to sell our souls.
I say good work to the staff at CFC for not acting rashly and showing faith in the players.
Go Hard.... GO PIES!

Well said, I couldnt agree more.
We dont want to make the same mistakes we made in the early 90's in moving heaven and earth to pick up a high profile player. While Buckley and Rocca have been excellent additions, we had to give up many early picks to get them. If we were to go down that path again then all the good work the last 12-24 months will disappear and we while we might be a force for a season or two, it wouldnt be sustainable and end up going back down the bottom again.
I have faith in Eddie, Mick, Noel, Neil and co...so should the rest of us.

Thank you for a sensible and humble post about trading- finally. Everyone always has something to say at this time of year and most are stupid enough to actually think they have any idea about what might really go on behind closed doors. As I recall, everyone had a good old whinge this time last year, and was CONVINCED that picking up the likes of Molloy, Wakelin, Steinfort, Clement were the WORST moves that wouldn't possibly work in the club's favour, remember?

We have a great list and I'm glad we didn't insult any of our guys by suggesting they are expendable trade material. *If* someone *wants* to leave then do a deal, like we did with Willo and Michael, otherwise pick up the young guys and develop them. There is another future Black, Misiti, Everitt out there every year...we have a few on our list already believe me!
So find them young...and make them ours...we don't want rejects and mercenaries...we want people who *want* to play for Collingwood MORE than they want a million bucks....and the chances are that after their career is done their fame will give them success and their $millions to boot.

I couldn't agree more. How do clubs expect players to put their bodies on the line and be loyal to their club when the clubs themselves swap and trade players like they are pieces of meat? I'm glad we haven't followed in the footsteps of clubs like Hawthorn and what they've done with Croad.
We have a fantastic team who are committed to both their jumper and their team-mates and that's what will lead them to their ultimate victory.
GO PIES!

LD you are right re the princliple of not getting ripped off in a trade. I can only presume that the deal wanted by the other clubs must have been considered too expensive.
Having said that, if the addittion of 1 player for 8 players and six drafts choices meant we would win a flag it would be the bargain of the millenium and not to do the deal would amount to incompetance.
Unfortunately life and Footy are not so black and white and you could never say that a flag would follow a from a trade. All I acn say is that in my opinion a decent ruckman would have seen us in the finals this year. That is worth a very, very big price given our youth and obvious ruck weakness. It is fine to say Josh will be a star and Richards looks promising but what about the next 2 years? It is conceiveable to me that we make the finals next year and a GF the following year. What if we loose the GF in a close match where our rucks are soundly beaten? What would you have given to have got a ruckman then?
I know we can't answer these questions because they all involve so much uncertainty but it is these issues which are relevant in making a call on how much to sacrifice to gain a player which fills a need. The point is, look at all the issues not just x for y sounds fair or not.

Sorry GregJ but that is rubbish.
We had first draft choice and knew who we would get and what his potential was. We wouldn't have traded then for the simple reason that we wouldn't have got an adequate deal because Joash was clearly the most promising junior for a very long time.
You cannot make that leap from comments aboout this years trading. We have pick No.11 and I don't know who is likely to be available. If you get a required player for an unknown you may go for it. If you get offered a good player for Josh Fraser you would refuse the deal.
