Say what you like, but when we had the chance a couple of years back we should have got the G-Train.

West Coast decided not to deal with us. Not our fault.

Not only Gehrig, Pies also missed Plugger and Quinlan.

WCE were part of the problem with Gehrig but the major part of the problem was RJ - Gehrigs manager and Black, S.Grant etc.,

Pies have a very poor history of trades with RJ's clients.

we should have

Post by Member »

its a pity we didnt use the stkilda tactics to get these players
i would only have got gehrig and black

ron joseph made allegedly, though not proven a lot of money via kick backs to push his clients to the saints

he also got good deals for them

gehrig
black
capuano
lawrense
callaghan

we should have done the same thing

edit by LD for bbmods...can posters be very careful in distinguishing rumour and fact in this, and all other forums.

Wouldn't it have been good to get the big G. Great foil for Tarrant. And extra 100 goals. Thank-you very much.

If only...

Not true sq3.

The one reason we didn't get Gherig was because of WCE, namely Trevor Nisbett. Wouldn't deal with us and would have prefered to lose Gherig for next to nothing even after we offered them something decent.

This is one occasion where the failed deal was not our fault at all.

That's been the story of Collingwood. No one wants to trade with us properly. West Coast wouldn't because of MM. Port wouldn't because they did not want to strengthen our side. Does not leave much for us in terms of bringing some real talent to the club!

thats not true either spoljar. Port deperately wanted to deal with us, they just wanted something decent. And when we offered them what they considered unacceptable (McGough + pick 17) they rightfully rejected it on principle.

That's exactly what I was trying to say D9, but what I should have said is "for nothing much in return". For us to get Stevens for McGough and pick 17 would have been a bonanza for us. We would have got a ready made Midfielder for the next 6-7 years who is a class player. And yet they would have got a player that struggles to get a game for us!
Their decision was certainly justified as they seem to have a good depth of players and were able to cover him, which they would have known. Why would they want to make us a stronger side with no real benefit to them. So in short, I agree with you!

It would have been nice. I think he wanted to come to Collingwood too, but shite happens.

I'm fairly sure that Dean Laidley would want to trade with us as he is good friends with MM. Maybe that will help with Brent Harvey?

D9 - WCE were part of the reason for Gehrig even though RJ played his part - but - RJ was the reason that Black and S.Grant did not end up at the Pies.

we should have got him

I think we need to cast our minds back and think of the circumstances when the G-Train left West Coast. I hate to say this, but I know one particular club was not interested in the G-Train at all and said as much. Collingwood. It is easy to blame everyone about our recruiting, but I know for a fact that Collingwood did not want him and said as much.

Easy to blame West Coast an RJ but it wasn't the first time we blame other people or cubs for not wanting to deal with us, but half the time our name gets mentioned for failing to get a player, when we didn't even want them in the first place! In this case we didn't want Fraser Gehric and we didn't get him. pretty simple.

Another one that was correct was knowing that West Coast wouldn't deal with Collingwood involving Gehrig. This source came from a current AFL player who is managed by Gehrigs Manager.
This page even has Ed himself commenting on a rumour, and Rohan denying that its Ed.
