Now I know MM will not lose his job as he has just been appointed and is most likely on Mega Bucks. Yet what do you fans now think when so many of you thought he was going to be our Saviour. I know that many young blokes at the Weagles lost confidence under his severe and humorless manner. His recent record? - My left toenail could have coached the eagles to 2 premierships in the '90s. Is he really what this club needed? Time will tell but don't be too quick to put all your hopes in the MM brigade. The reality is we had 10 or 11 players today with about 20 games or less under their belt. We are rebuilding and will not be a top 4 threat in the next 2 seasons.
His (MM) value is in coaching these young fellows to a plan that with experience they will all learn to follow. Then we will reap the rewards of the recruiting of MM and the young fellows. Unfortunately our expectations have been raised too high and now relity bites. However, losses to Port and Freo are unacceptable and capitulations to Geelong and Melbourne are disgraceful. This is not something even the poor teams of recent years did. It is time to see a better effort from these blokes lucky enough to wear the black and white jumper.

Beware of judging a coach based on less than a year of coaching, particularly when one is attempting to completely rebuild.
I seem to recall that one T. Shaw was pronounced a genius coahc after having his team at 6-2 after 8 rounds in 1996.
Wait until the end of 2001 before pronouncing sentence on MM.
Having said that (I've just realised that I think I've written those 3 words a number of times on this BB) I have a number of connections with Amatuer & AFL coaching panels (esp. Nth Melbourne's) and they all believe that the Eagles are the greatest underachievers of the 90s. They all believed it was the recruiting and early 90s work of MM & others that set them up, but that MM was detrimental for 96 onwards.

It wouldn't matter if you appointed Mick Malthouse, Denis Pagan, Kevin Sheedy, Tom Hafey, Jock McHale and Ron Barassi all as co-coaches. And recruited Carey, Hird, Everitt, Whitnall, Lloyd, Lucas, Abraham and Farmer. We still wouldn't be any good.
There is something fundamentally wrong with this club. And it goes beyond personnel.
I've got a theory that if you got the entire current Essendon side and put them in Collingwood guernseys they wouldn't win another game all season because they'd be Collingwood.
We'll probably sack half this side at the end of the season, and all our rejects will go off to other clubs and be superstars. It seems like everything Collingwood touches turns to shit.
What have we done wrong? What fundamental law of Karma have we broken?
There's no point blaming Malthouse. We've dragged this once-great coach down to our level. By the time he's finished his contract at Victoria Park no other club will want him.

I think you are being a little premature in your analysis of MM, if you are bagging him. Perhaps 5 on the trot early on got our hopes up a little. He has a young side, who everyone reckons will take a couple of seasons. He'll get that. As to the learning curve of players we have, I well remember an exasperated Lethal in 87 (circa) when replying to a question from a scribe as to why the pies played the way they did (tres ordinaire, like at present). He said it was not the way they were supposed to, meaning perhaps the game plan went a little off under pressure. Perhaps we are at a similar stage now.
Alfs point is well made, if a little over the top. The club is a rooted unit at present. I'll use a pub analogy. It's easy to screw up a good pub (ask Daicos), but hard to make a shit one good (ask Pete again!). It will take a long time for the pies to regain their aura and confidence. The previous admins at the club (last couple pre Eddie) struck me with one thought. They were NON winners (my most devastating insult). The blokes they have now will accept nothing less, if their history is anything to judge them by.
