Collingwood has unveiled its latest New South Wales AFL Scholarship scheme selection.
Athletic 15-year-old Tom Young is the second player selected by the Magpies under the scheme devised by the AFL in 2005 to provide a clearer pathway for elite NSW athletes to develop as AFL footballers.
jonno, can you elaborate how this works...how can we take these players if they are not on our list at such a young age... i have missed the boat on this.
There's more to life than footy.........just not much more.
AFIK, we can nominate certain NSW/ACT 14-15 year olds to nurture and train until they are at the correct drafting age, when we have permission to have first preference on them with our final choice at the National Draft.
The StK reference is via a HS article earlier in the year, stating how the Saints were keen on Young.
So are you saying no one is allowed to recruit them until after our final draft pick? So we could take them at pick 50 if we wanted? And how did we beat Saints to this... how is it determined which club nurtures the player?? Is it up to the player to decide where he wants to go...and is there a contract...will this player be paid?

Nah its not per year...im pretty sure its a signing bonus....one off payment.
As reported earlier in the year, we "beat" St Kilda to him by Young choosing us as his club of choice. Obviously im not privy to the details, but St Kilda had apparently approached the kid first up and done a bit of the ground work at the start...then they make out that Collingwood 'swooped' on him... as all good magpies are prone to do....and hte kid and his family preferred Collingwood.
I echo Johnno's sentiments...i dont care if he's a gun or not....suck it St Kilda.
Is this Hine at work, because if Hine is behind this i have total faith, if he is getting proper look at NSW talent pool he will snare us a few gems. The guy hasnt failed once, it sounds to good to be true however, because these kids would be the best in that state.
