It's not just stats, though, Zakal. Pendles does lead on those but fact is, he was starting to tail off in the games before he hurt his foot. Selwood has simply got better as the year has gone on - that's amazing in a first year player. And anyway, 27 possessions, 2 goals and nine clearances yesterday: good as Pendlebury is, he hasn't had a game to rival that.

But there's no need to lick our wounds. We didn't have a crack at Selwood because we didn't come into the draft until pick 8 and Selwood went at 7. The knee problem probably stopped him from going between 1 and 3, but as you say the man himself reckons it's right as rain now. Time will tell.

Anyway, they'll both be great players, I don't think we've got anything to cry about. But boy, wouldn't you love both on your team!

Yeah this is true...although i would argue that it shouldnt matter WHEN you start trailing off, because (if we ignore the foot injury for a moment) while Selwood was doing nothing in the seniors, getting dropped and stuffing around in the seconds...Pendles was dominating. Admittedly Pendles form hasnt improved as rapidly as Selwoods of late...but again, this is perhaps due to Selwood having so much ground to catch up just to reach where Pendles was at in round 1. In fact its before round 1, he dominated our NAB cup games too. 29 touches one week, 31 the next wasnt it? The award should be based on season-long performance.

But anyway, its a moot point now because due to the injury, Pendles simply will not win. Selwood is the flavour of the month and Pendles is not anymore. Unless of course there is a marked change in fortunes in the next 3 weeks.

Definitely agree about having both. Both so classy already, and there will be a lot of Buckley vs Voss about these two boys in years to come....and like those two, both sides will wish they managed to lure/keep both.

Still cannot explain why it seems to me that Collingwood have found strong KPPs (Rocca, Cloke, Presti, Clement) more easily than we have outstanding midfielders. Have we been lulled into false draft security because of Buckley ?

I think you make a very good point re Buckley.

Why would we have been looking to draft midfielders when we had Buckley, Burns, Williams and a Copeland winning Licuria in our side?

We actually traded away both Williams and Heath Scotland BECAUSE we thought we had more than enough midfielders. (might have been more to it than that for Willo, but still)...and as you say...in that very trade, Clement basically fell into our lap. Out one midfielder whome we believed we had plenty of, and in one dominant KPP.

Another part of the problem was Micks influence on recruiting the wrong kind of mids. (he admitted this himself also)....strong bodied plodders who 20 years ago would have been premiership players. McGough is case on point. Superb possession-accumulating ability but slow, and with positively shocking disposal. Shackleton, Yakka, King, Lokan....once we realised Bucks wasnt going to be around forever we tried to draft mids...but with no success because we went after the wrong type.

I think thats two of the main reasons why we have a number of KPPs prospects, but only a few recent additions to the "true midfielder" category.

great story re this in the 07 year book - our recruiters need a pat on the back for taking a gamble on thomas and pendles, the easy choice would have been Ellis (isn't he doing well at the Hawks!)

can't wait to see what they have unearthed from this years draft.
