I do not even want to meet the current Collingwood players, let alone the ex-champions. I used to drop in at the Bush Inn occasionally ... one day you could have knocked me over when I saw Len Thompson having a drink with Tuddy (as they were, and still might be, prone to do). I did not say anything to them, did not even listen in on what they are saying. I deliberately ordered a drink next to them, so I could stand next to Thommo.

I did not want my illusions shattered by reality. Daicos, McKenna, Thompson, McGuanne, Brown and Buckley are my heroes. I do not want to meet my heroes, they may not be at their best, or even worse they might be at their best and still be disappointing.

Acknowledgement is another thing though. Kids are another thing too, as are sick kids. Some people believe you can measure a person's true worth by their empathy to animals and sick children. I do not know if Buckley has a dog, but I put a lot of stock Alf's story (as he heard it in passing not from some publicity stunt) as a reflection of Buckley rather than how he is standoffish in comparison to other Collingwood players. I wonder how many sick kids has Mal Michael become acquainted with whiel he was at Collingwood.

My sentiment exactly Greg J.
"I do not want to meet my heroes, they may not be at their best, or even worse they might be at their best and still be disappointing."

I as a kid met my favourite Collingwood palyer in the city one day and said "Hey! ---- how are ya?" He turned looked at me and my mate and walked off. A "Hi!" too much to ask??? A wink? May be a groan? "Ugh! Ugh!"
I thought "F%^& you!". I wasn't some shrinking violet. But come Saturday (they played on Saturday in those days) I barracked hard for him. I didn't give a f$%k! I just wanted him to play well for Collingwood and help us win.
I had to face school mates on Monday!!!
