Bugger, I just miss the new cut off figure.
But I too will never buy health insurance

Goodonya if you're happy to wait for elective surgery or go to the dental hospital for treatment. I have private health insurance and had it for my kids mainly. When my son had a tumour in the muscle above his knee, the GP referred me to a specialist who arranged all the tests, chose the hospital (mercy private) and did the surgery all within a couple of weeks of the initial problem.

I'll be very interested to see what this does to the price of Private Health insurance and public hospital waiting lists.

My father (No private health) had his back surgery postponed 7 times because it was considered, non essential.

I needed a small operation on my toes and got to pick and choose which day I wanted to have the surgery done with Private Health cover. I wonder how long I would have waited without it.

While I agree that having to pay for hospital care is a discrace, I will be damned if I have to wait months on end to have any so called non essential surgery done under our currect hospital system.

It is not a matter of not wanting to pay for it - we have no kids, both work fulltime, have never had any benefits of any kind and don't have the luxury of working in an industry that allows tax minimization

After 30 years working in health care - private and public - I would not go to a private hospital (even if I had to wait longer in the public system) and so why should I pay premiums for something I will never ever use - that is my choice isn't it as it is yours to go private

Thank god for "choice" and the have's and have not's. Cause if everyone went over to private health - then I dare say...welcome to the waiting list.

I've never had private health and probably never will.

gee, same stuff anyway. I never said it wasn't a choice either.

If you want to choose to wait on a waiting list for elective surgery, go for it. Your choice. If you want to pay full price for dental work or wait for years on the public list, go for it. Life's all about choice.

Gee thanks!

That's why I'm happy - see now I and many other have a better choice than we had

Before: pay private health insurance or pay the surcharge :(
Now: choose to pay private health insurance or not :D

I'm happy to wait - 30 odd years as a Collingwood member has taught me to be patient :(

Only drawback I can see is hmmm will have to stay married otherwise it will be back to paying the surcharge - damn

Love this bullshit about choice - like many low income earners can choose if they want to take out health insurance or not, or if they will send their children to private school. As far as I'm concerned access to decent health services and education shouldn't be determined by the size of you wallet. It's a basic right of citizenship and should be accessible by all.

Taking off the levy is a good start. Hopefully the 30% rebate on private insurance is next. Put the $3 billion plus it costs into the public system rather than lining the pockets of the insurance companies

I don't care what it costs, on principle I will never pay for health insurance while others are denied access to decent services.

Hopefully Rudd will target the ridiculous level of government funding for private schools next.
