But rampant in South Australia. They have barriers along the border but still they slip through...

I'd be disappointed if he hung up his boots.

He can play on.

I reckon him not playing in the finals would make him hungrier for one last tilt.

I hope he plays on - he has been a fave of mine for many years now. Missed him last night

With regards to the assistant coaching position - why wouldnt he stay on at Collingwood in an assistant role? McKenna leaving opens up a door??

COLLINGWOOD captain Scott Burns is on the verge of heading to Geelong as an assistant coach if, as expected, he decides to close the curtain on his celebrated career.

It is understood the South Australian and his management have been sounded out up to five AFL clubs, among them arch-rival Carlton, for an assistant coaching role.

Sources close to the Burns family say he has been particularly impressed by a bid from the Cats, having all but ruled out a return to Adelaide because of the roots he's laid down in Victoria.

Burns has said he would talk to Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse to decide whether to continue playing, but the strong word is he will retire after one year as Collingwood captain.

Burns's standing as a strong leader with integrity was enhanced after the stance he took in the Alan Didak-Heath Shaw affair and he has been admired from afar by more than one club for his football smarts and persistence.

It also has not hurt that Collingwood has had a raft of assistant and specialist coaches through the club since its shift to the Lexus Centre, which has exposed him to more influential voices in the game.
