Woewodin was a brownlow medallist but who ever ranked him up with the very elite in the game? Good player but he was never going to make the impact other better players would have.~Madness~ wrote:Didn't we recruit a brownlow medallist too once?
I think the way he left the club and after how long speaks volumes.

Cousins is practically there for the taking. He is a superstar. It's a no-brainer. Then again, so was Tony Lockett......
I'll up your Lockett with a Buckley
Clement
Medhurst
Holland
Want some more?
Wait ............
O'Bree
Licuria
Now compare to the ones we have missed out on. I'm not even going to bother listing them, speaks for itself and makes that list look rather lame.
Who says we missed out on them
What you are saying is Collingwood should go out and recruit players that you think they should, and if they don't do what you want then the club has failed
Big head much!!!

One very good year does not make a career. You still rate Tarrant? Medhurst is a good player but isn't even the best in our team in the position he plays. That's Didak and, btw, if it wasn't for Didak's stupidity, he would have been our All Australian this year.Kingswood wrote:medhurst too.... "you suppose"
Get out.
Nothing against Medders, he was very good. However lets be bloody realistic about things.

Not sure what you mean by your question. I was just continuing the list of star players we've recruited over the years. I've not been criticising our recruiting.Frank Stone wrote:So is it about recruiting players or recruiting player YOU want?

Lockett? - ancient history.
Judd? - Carlton had a much stronger hand to play.
Stevens? - we made the right choice, keep Didak, unfortunately we weren't crap enough to get him, so he went to Carlton.
Struggling to think of any others, unless your talking about those tentatively linked to deals by the media every other year.
So, what's your criticism? That we should be prepared to do a Carlton and spend 5 years at the bottom, so we can land some big fish and draft some stars?
How many stars have been landed by other teams in the last 5 years? Very few.

I think there is enough evidence to suggest, over the years, Collingwood have targeted, with intent, the following -Frank Stone wrote:Hey dumbo, that's the issuedids_04 wrote:Out of all them, one star player (Clement), one very good player (Licuria), one good player (Rocca). Lockett, Gehrig, Stevens, J.Brown, Judd. That's off the top of my head.
I'm not a big head, I want the club to recruit what they NEED. In this case, an experienced, star midfielder with match winning potential (in other words, gets his own ball and delivers with precision) is what we need and have needed for years. Oh and they can also teach Pendles and Thomas a thing or two also, don't you think?

Yeah, but you're presenting it as some kind of fault of the club. The player, the player's club and other interested clubs all have some say in the matter.
Just because we don't get a certain player we may have made an offer for, does not mean the club has necessarily made a mistake.
As your meagre list proves (strikeout Brown as he didn't move at all), star players do not move teams very often.

Ok, I'm sure I'm the only one in the whole country that thinks Collingwood needs a Kerr or Cousins. If they don't need that, why the hell did they make whatever play they did for Chris Judd last year?Frank Stone wrote:You are still saying that have to get what YOU want.
IT DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT
Of course we have no need or want of them.....

There's many players any team would reasonably want. I'm pretty sure we'd love to have Buddy Franklin.dids_04 wrote:Ok, I'm sure I'm the only one in the whole country that thinks Collingwood needs a Kerr or Cousins. Wanting a player is not enough. The stars need to align to land a star from another club. It does not happen very often.
Sometimes, even though the club may want a player, other clubs have more to offer (Judd last year), or we may not want to forsake our future to get them (Port wanting Didak for Stevens).
I'm sure we'd love to have Kerr and Cousins. However, the asking price for Kerr (if he's going anywhere, not all that likely) will be very high - still under contract, many teams would be interested - it's possible the asking price would be too high for the club, deciding this does not mean they've failed. It means they are confident in the list they've set up, and do not want to destroy it by giving up too much in a deal for one player.
Hawthorn did not go out trading for a star, nor did Geelong. Most teams build their list from within rather than looking outside.
The Cousins situation is very different, it's mostly about convincing him to play for Collingwood. He'll probably not nominate for the National draft, so the discussion about giving up picks for him is likely moot.

On the contrary...
Geelong traded for Brad Ottens..and didnt that make a difference.
Cost them a player they drafted for a first round draft pick (Maloney to Melbourne) plus their own first rounder

Anyway, I've not been saying that trading is not a legitimate way to improve a team, it is. Though, more about improving its balance and addressing positional holes, rather than winning the deal (though obviously the latter does happen).
My main point has been that not getting a player that has been linked to Collingwood is not necessarily a failure by the club.
If we could trade for a quality midfielder, that would be great (we certainly made an effort to get Judd last year), though not to do so is not necessarily a failure. Given that these midfielders are quality, there aren't many teams willing to give them up, and very few big name deals come to fruition.
I did the stats for Didaks season some weeks back. When I compared rounds 1-11 to 12/18 the average possession rate per game was almost the same, however when I compared the average goal/assists per game for the same periods Didaks output in that area had greatly reduced during rounds 12-18 by around 50% from memory.
So yes Didaks form in relation to his impact on the scoreboard had reduced greatly for the last 5-7 weeks before he was suspended.
