You should've seen the fun I had trying to work out how to do a hyper-link. I was trying every variation on HTML I could think of, until I finally worked out that you just type the bloody link in and it happens automatically.
But as for the fancy formatting stuff ... could I please just re-iterate Joffa's sentiments:

The only way I've been able to make this work is by entering the HTML tags manually. And it seems to be necessary to create a symmetrical pattern, with the actual text in the middle. If you're trying to combine several features at once this can be hard work.
I think it's a feature that should be used sparingly for maximum impact.
