Jeff Clifton who played full back for the Pies in the 70's is currently in hospital battling Prostrate Cancer.
Clifton was one of my boyhood heros and a decent bloke to boot who is always up for a chat.
Clifton was a member of the 1970 Grand Final playing full back. Recruited to the magpies as a twenty year old from W.A

Best of luck jeff our thoughts are with you mate.

Thanks for letting us know Joffa. I'll say a prayer for Jeff Clifton. One of the unsung greats of our club. I loved his ability to blanket opposition players and launch attacks from defence.

I remember Jeff Clifton. As I kid in the 70s I used to tune into 3KZ or 3AW to get the teams as they were being announced on a Thursday, and they would always read out Collingwoods as:

"From the backline - O'Callaghan Clifton Gott..."

No computers or internet back then, it was either TV or radio or the papers for your footy news.

He was a very solid defender, but I remember him playing on Peter Hudson in Huddo's "comeback" game in 73? and Huddo kicked 8 on him. We still beat the Hawks however, and Clifton employed the unusual tactic of manning up on Hudson by turning his back on the play and just facing Hudson (didn't work obvioulsy, but it was a big talking point).
Collingwood and cricket umpiring - my life is black and white.

Jeff was a great Pie fullback, he and ted potter were like rocks in defence. Best of luck Jeff, great memories of you kicking drop kicks out long from full back.

Jeff was a fantastic player for Collingwood. Very quiet personality, but got the job done well!

Best of luck Jeff, and all you blokes, get the blood test early!

Very sad news. Jeff was a very underrated player, in an era where there were quite a few very good full backs around. Condolences to the Clifton family. I hope he enjoyed the grand final.

One of my early favourites. Had to play on the likes of Hudson and could so easily have been a premiership Pie. RIP
