So, what's stopping the match committee from selecting him? He's served his internal suspension, so if he's good enough, and we have a role for him, he should be playing.AN_Inkling wrote:This is where Buckley's off-field problems hurt. About a month ago he was ready to come into the side whenever needed, possibly still is, though has only had one game back. But, with his off-field issues, he may have to wait some time for a call up. Would have been an excellent replacement for Johnson.

Why is everyone such a rap for Simon Buckley? I was surprised when we picked him up from the Dees.David wrote:So, what's stopping the match committee from selecting him? There are surely too many players ahead of him in the queue right now.

I have to agree. Not sure he could get to match fitness and prove his form in 10 weeks. Stick a fork in this one.jack_spain wrote:When will the club simply admit he's DONE!Hm wrote:

Even if he started playing back with the VFL next week, he'd never be ready by season's end. Hasn't played a senior game for years.
This is an embarrassment for all concerned frankly.

Well, there's the simple and obvious reason: he's missed three weeks of footy (had just the one game back). He was already a player who needed to prove himself good enough to play in the firsts. Having a holiday doesn't help, and any residual loss of standing, if any, could further affect his chances.David wrote:So, what's stopping the match committee from selecting him? And Jack: Buckley's 23 years old, 190cm, a good build, with good pace, and a nice long kick. I don't think anyone's suggesting he's destined for greatness, but he does have the attributes to be a decent addition. His VFL form this season has been very good, especially just prior to his suspension.
Well done boys!

Pretty sure we played both Jolly and Fraser in rd2 and Jamar still tore us a new one.
Anyhow, Melbourne have generally only played the one ruckman this season and personally I'd rather Dawes/Anthony at full forward with Fraser and L.Brown battling it out for the 2nd ruck position.

I still think it was over the top to suspend him from the VFL. Would a regular senior player have been blocked from playing in the seconds in a similar scenario? If an internal suspension was necessary at all, keeping him from getting a senior game over a 3-4 week period would have sent a strong enough message. I'm not sure the club has helped itself in this instance, and as I wrote at the time, I'm not sure that they even needed to intervene in this matter at all.AN_Inkling wrote:Well, there's the simple and obvious reason: he's missed three weeks of footy (had just the one game back). In the end, Buckley's case is dealt with by the courts - is the club trying to impose some kind of moral viewpoint, or just trying to save itself from bad PR? I suspect it's the latter.

WHEN will we ever learn to stop underestimating the opposition? Is this a Collingwood fan thing or a footy fan thing? I just don't get how we can we all that confident after losing two and just winning one in our last 3 weeks!
Those predicting a Collingwood win by over 10 goals are on another planet. This is Melbourne's grand final, always has been over the past few years. This will be totally focussed and fired up like for no other game. We are really struggling to put in 4 solid, winning quarters together over the past 3 games. We need to improve in that and many other areas.
Colingwood will win but it will be real close, 1 -12 points.
