Mark Taylor didn't know when his time was up! Debate went on for ages about when he should retire or be dropped. It was an excruciating wait, let me tell you!

And Stevie's time still isn't up! He has heaps to offer this team, and is still making runs. His attitude also puts fear into the opposition, which is a big bonus.

Mark Taylor was the best slip fielder going around especially off Warney.

The best close in fieldsman was Boonie

I realise I am biased but I think both Border and Marky Mark were better slip fieldsmen than Taylor.

As for the next captain, I'm not so sure about Ponting. I will watch with interest as to how he goes captaining the one day side in this series...I'm not sure he's mature enough to captain, he hasn't got that indefinable something which is needed IMO. I'd still live to see Warney as Aussie Captain - how appropriate, a lovable larrikin as head of our national team. I love it!

Bart, Taylor WAS pushed! Obviously you're too young to remeber Image, but it was a huge point of conjecture at the time. He continually failed with the bat and everyone was baying for his blood (I believe it may have been during this period though that he made that high score of 300 runs or whatever - I've blocked it from my memory!!! hehehe Image)

Overall Mark Waugh is a better fielder as he can field in more spots and was good with run outs and could do the freakish. However as a slipper my money would be on Taylor. Allan Border was good but did he ever slip to a quality spinner ??

Oh, and as you can probably tell, I form my opinions by myself, without paying attention to stats, so I have no idea if the stats reflect my thoughts or not, and don't particularly care!

Wasn't Marky Mark's average over 40 as well? I think so - and it really is irrelevant to whether they should still play on or not as an average is formed over time and doesn't reflect recent form. This said, you know I still wish Marky Mark was playing - maybe he could've pulled a brilliant performance out of the bag and made a double century, similar to Taylor, and so have retained his spot in the side. We will never know...

Though I guess everyone's time is up at some stage...(I'm rambling now!)

Border would've fielded to Warney in the early days, didn't he?

And is that stat true? Is Taylor really the record holder for catches? I though Border had that in the bag! Oh well, doesn't change my opinion (btw, I was a HUGE fan of Allan's, and was devastated when he retired).

Id rather watch a Mark Waugh 50 than a Taylor or Border 100. At least Mark Waugh gave value for money with his stroke play especially in his prime. People forget that its only recently that Australia have scored quickly. In the days of Boon, Border, Marsh, Taylor etc etc it was only Mark Waugh who scored very quickly.

What? Now Marky Mark is the record holder??? Make up your mind, Bart!!! You're confusing me! (see why I don't rely on stats! They keep changing!!!!)

Watching Mark Taylor bat was as boring as watching paint dry! I've always thought Stevie and Border to be quite similar players though, in the way they went about their business, stoically and stubbornly. They rarely gave their wickets away cheaply and would just toil away at it. Similar captains too - Border was nicknamed Grumpy, as is Stevie now!

You're right though JLC, in that test cricket is much more interesting now cos the Aussies score so rapidly, which usually mean there's a result too. I still remember the days when they would play the full 5 days and it'd be draw after draw after draw, and the run rate would be like 2 an over or something. Shocking!
