Would be good to see ALL pies fans with an arm band at the MCG vs WC, truly SIDE by SIDE!

It was not your place to name the player - very poor form.

time and place - lack of respect

Visdom, John had already been named when the original post was made. His death was only confirmed later, at which points the major media outlets ceased naming him.

Really terrible news. He seemed to be enjoying his time with Port and played most of the the games.

The beard suited him too. What a shock.

Channel Seven just publicly confirming that it is John McCarthy.

I know footy is the last thing on our minds right now. This is a shock for all of us who knew J Mac as a Collingwood player. I am genuinely sad.

I wonder what effect it will have on our players who knew him so well? Given they will feel emotionally drained after this week, I for one am prepared to accept whatever happens this weekend. If we win, we win one for John, but if we lose, then I won't be getting stuck into any players that's for sure. Footy is the least important thing at times like this - even finals.

Sympathy to the McCarthy family.

Absolutely devastating news for John's family and close friends. He was a fine young individual who maximised his opportunities. It's such a pity that his life was tragically cut short.

My condolences go out to his family, his friends, the Port Adelaide Football Club and his teammates from Port Adelaide and Collingwood.

I'm still shocked.

Good post Jack. At the end of the day, this tragic event puts things into perspective.
