The mystery is:

What is so different about the AO and US Open surfaces that can be the cause of such different records?

Without looking into the numbers, I reckon not only is the US Open the most balanced matchup between the Big Three, but it's also the most likely GS for those outside the Big Three.

My guess is the fact that the US Open is played later in the calendar year (in late August/early September) means results can be more unpredictable than usual.

Players start to battle fatigue and injury niggles, whereas they're fresher earlier in the year.
