Agreed, the umpiring reminded me of the days when we would get the upper hand on the Hawks and the Green where there to square the game up with decisions they would never pay us. It's crap that the umpiring does not effect the flow of the game. How I hate those tic e tac decisions when you gift them a goal but not just one two to three. The generosity of the ups really gave the Deamons the game!PyreneesPie wrote:That's interesting!! Gerard is usally a very unbiased commentator.Greening gold wrote: I was on the road between Bateman's Bay and Canberra listening on ABC (thanks again ABC for the coverage) and Gerard Whately was speechless at some of the umpiring, and then comments such as "Wowee" (seriously) and "Dees certainly getting the rub of the green from the umpires". Pity it would cost Bucks $20k (like Clarkson) if he put the truth on the table in the post-match interviews.
Which coach was it who said something about "crowd pressure" on the umpires? I really felt today there was "Big Freeze" pressure on the umpires. They are only human after all and have a sub-conscious like all of us, but it would be nice if they could come out and say it. Might make us collingwood people feel better. I know it won't happen though.

As I said previously, I think Adams is definitely worth his place in the team if he can be instructed to handball or soccer the ball forward when he is having a bad kicking game. If you watch him closely, he doesn't have days like today all the time. The coaches just need to to be onto it and give him proper direction on game day.slangman wrote:But it's always about hitting a target and kicking straight. They are the non negotiable in football.PyreneesPie wrote:How can leaders drive excellence if they don't posses it themselves?
(Sorry, am not able to quote the quote).
Because it's not always about "excellence" - most of the time, it's about grunt, determination, guts, will to win.
I refer to the great teams of recent years and can't think of many who had poor kicks in their leadership group.
In the AFL, the ability to kick is king. The hawks proved that with their flags.
Replaced the premium kickers with average and they come back to the pack quickly
Oh and Tony Shaw wasn't such a great kick, but he was an incredibly inspirational leader. (Yeah, I know, that was some time ago!! ) However, a player's true value can sometimes be overlooked. Who else would you have played instead of Adams today?

Absolutely.Collingwood Crackerjack wrote:Did anyone else notice De Goey falling off the chase a few times?
This lack of 2 way running is a game killer for us.
I watched him fall off and his opponent carried on up the field , got it and drilled it into their forward line.
we don't eat our own at collingwood we just allow them to foul our nest.

Shaw was not a long kick but he rarely missed, and his 30m handballs onto a spot were legendary. No comparison there. It's strange for someone at this level to be so inept at something so fundamental.PyreneesPie wrote:

Their outs were bigger than ours, time for you to face facts, we're shit.Magpietothemax wrote:This is damn delirious. I definitely am not won to Nathan Buckley as a coach. But honestly, how many of our best did we have out for this game?Of all the losses we have had, this one would be the least likelly to prove that "Buckley must go".Bob Sugar wrote:Time to tank now, get us a nice shiny DP and a new coach.
We kicked st8 today, we dominated the ruck and we still lost to Melbourne without their 2 best players, we are shit and Buckley must go.

Today was a finals like game.
Big strong bodies win every day of the week over lighter opponents.
We have Phillips, Smith, Broomy, Moore, Brown, Aish and probably one or 2 others that get pushed off the ball.
We also don't have a few players who can really burn up thru the middle.
Of Treloar and Pendles go down we are rooted.

But it's not all the time Mugwump. Some games he's okay.Mugwump wrote:Shaw was not a long kick but he rarely missed, and his 30m handballs onto a spot were legendary. No comparison there. It's strange for someone at this level to be so inept at something so fundamental.PyreneesPie wrote:

I ask again - who else would you put in in front of him?

Taylor Adams is very contradictory, in the sense that he can sometimes have brilliant games, and on other occasions his errors in delivery can provoke despair. What is constant about him however is his absolute effort and commitment, and his desperate energy to seek out the ball. As another poster commented he should be mentored more during a game. If he is having a "bad disposal day", get him to handball on instead, or some other specific role. His incredible, gut wrenching effort can still and should be channeled in a constructive direction. Great leaders are not always those who achieve the most excellent standard, but they are those who encourage others, by sharing their disappointments and by demonstrating their refusal to give in. (See Nick Maxwell).

I agree with what you're saying. However, those players you mention are still young and hopefully will develop body strength as they mature.thompsoc wrote:Today was a finals like game.

Also, we are really missing Varcoe, but that said, we need another like him in the wings.
