If cyclists are to be registered , then would you then expect that each person who takes the field for a fun "Nicks" game be registered ?

Should each person who plays a "Nicks" game be required to prove a level of fitness , are they covered if an opposition player cleans them up fairly with them hitting their head leading to severe concussion and weeks or months of medical bills or unemployment ?

Should they be registered with a football orginasition , what if Darryl White wanted to play.

Should they be required to submit relevant police checks for each person who attends , if there are to be any children present ?

Should proper HACCP food regulations be followed if there is to be food prepared and served , what if people are food poisoned by poor food preparation , and are off sick from work ?

Should there be a thorough line inspection of the playing arena be done to make sure that no foreign objects are there that could cause injury ?

I don't believe that bikes will ever be registered , nor should they , because the problem is in the whole scheme of things there are so many other things that the police and motorists should be worried about than the very rare idiot cyclist.

18 yearn old Jonny rides down the street to get his mum some milk for the cake she is making , but Jonnys registered bike with number plates has a flat tyre , so he borrows his 9 year old brother Sams bike which is not registered because Sam is allowed to ride on the footpath with his bike.

The cops see Jonny and pull him over , ask to see his ID and show his registration for his bike , neither of which he can show because he is in his board shorts and thongs having just jumped out of the family swimming pool , and because Sams bike is far too small for an 18 year old and looks like it has hardly been ridden , the cops suspect he has just stolen it.

The cops tell him that because he clearly has not got a basket in which to put the milk after he buys it , he will have to ride the bike one handed with the milk in is other hand and this is seen as a distraction to riding the bike and is no different to holding a mobile phone for a driver whilst driving which is illegal.

So the cops throw Jonny in the back of the divvy van and head of to the cop shop. When at the cop shop Jonny provides his statement and is let off with a $200.00 fine for riding an unregistered bike and 3 demerit points.

Taking away all the emotive parts of your argument, you appear to have boiled it down to the same situation as would occur if your Harley had a flat tyre so you took the unregistered trail bike on to a public road.
Same deal, same laws should apply.
As for Jonny, he could stand to lose a few pounds, being unemployed and all, so maybe a brisk walk to the shops instead?

Put a piece of metal behind your bike, the same size and weight of a number plate, jump on your bike and go for a 10 km ride. See how bullshit the excuse is when you get to the end of your ride. Also remember 10km is a pretty short ride for a road cyclist so if you really want to feel the pain then up it to at least 20 kms.

Who said the cycle "plate" would be the same size and weight as a car plate?
The car plate is very light anyway, be the size would be a problem. Maybe common sense would dictate that a motorcycle sized plate is appropriate.
Also, naturally, we would take advantage of new materials to make the "plate" safe, lightweight.
The cycling community is running out of excuses.

I've only really come across the problem the time I went to Brighton with my L plated daughter early saturday morning, what a nightmare! And they really did think they owned the road! I'm glad I don't have to worry about it over her in nice quiet suburban alton a, with nice big bike tracks away from the roads!

So imagine my surprise yesterday morning, when turn the corner of my quiet little street, to be confronted with the entire road covered in big arse Lycra! It's a feeder road, so narrow, if there is a car parked on one side, you have to wait if there is an oncoming car. So these guys have taken up the entire rest of the street! Since, from that corner, it's only about 150 meters to the end, I just sat behind them and went slow, very slow, the tail Enders seemed barely able to ride, or they were stuffed. thankfully, they didn't turn the corner, they went onto the bike track that goes along skeleton creek.

I was thinking of this when it happened, and I gotta say, if I was in a hurry, late for something, I would have been totally pissed off! surely it's not legal to ride sideways in a pack, six or seven wide? Who the he'll do they think they are blocking up the damn road? I don't care if they were preparing for the Olympics (judging by the lack of leg muscles on some, I think they needed training wheels, so probably not!) it really was ridiculous! They knew I was there, but made no attempt to let me pass.

The only other cyclist problem I've had, apart from dickheads at round a bouts who ride across not around, is the kid who drove in front of my car when I was making a left at a roundabout, and ended up under my bumper, (I had a 4wd at the time, and just didn't see him, he came out of nowhere).

So I can't really comment, but from what I've seen on the Telly, and the one time in Brighton, cyclists in traffic think they have a god given right to hold up traffic, and get real pissed off if cut off. So isn't bike riding supposed to be fun? I know it's exercise, but if I got that pissed off in my gym, I wouldn't do it! Maybe they like having an attitude problem! The ones riding around docklands when you walk to the footy certainly seem to! God help you if you step in the bike lane a foot! It just dent seem very pleasurable to me. Call me crazy but I would have thought they would get more enjoyment riding somewhere less crowded, and with less exhaust fumes!

I got a bike years ago, for exercise. Two trips to feed my horses down the old aviation road before the houses arrived, and I was done! It's bloody terrifying when a car goes past at 100 k's about a foot from you.

Driving the kids to school it used to annoy me when they were riding right on the rh line, when no cars can park there, the lane is more that wide enough, and I'd get close on purpose to give em a fright! Bit the new more peaceful me (ala yesterday!) will just smile, give em a bit more room, risking a head on but hey, the bike will be okay! And keep driving,

Unless the Pies lose, then I reserve the right to lose it with anybody!

Their excuse... I pay a car rego and bikes do less damage to the road..

Here is mine...

I have a car rego, doesn't mean I can ride a motor bike, drive a truck or another vehicle with the 1 rego.

You can get pulled over for riding a push bike and fined if you're drunk.

So just because you have a car rego doesn't mean you can ride your bike under it.

But I ride my bike once a year on a bike track... I don't see the need for rego on bike tracks, only roads.

But I ride my bike on the road once a year, why should I pay! I fish once a year but I still need to buy a licence... your point?

I believe they are legally allowed to ride two-wide, or three if one is overtaking. Certainly not six or seven.

Perhaps it was the Von Trapp family escaping the Nazi's, riding down the Matterhorn into the smooth valleys of Sunshine that they mistook for Switzerland?

And in other cycling news Ron Barassi fell off his bike, the question is was he really looking at a car crash while riding at Brighton beach, on a warm day? Or was he distracted by some of the other scenery.
