Some History
Hawthorn won their last 2 games in 2008, as did Sydney in 05, and Port in 04, Brisbane in 03 and 01, North in 99, Carlton in 95, Hawthorn in 91 and Collingwood in 1990. But in 09, 07, 06, 02, 00, 98, 97, 96, 94*, 93**, 92 the eventual Premiers won only 1 of their last 2. Significantly no one lost both although you could argue that WC of 94 did.
* bizarrely West Coast lost in round 22 and 24 but had the bye in round 23.
** Essendon won in round 20, lost in round 21 and had the bye in round 22.
Teams finishing on top of the ladder have won the GF in 1993, 1994, 1995, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2007.
The only times in the last 20 years that the #1 team has not made the GF are 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2005.

Yes, the preliminary final, but all things going right the Hawks shouldnt make it, they should be heading to Perth next week and if they survive that, a 6 day turnaround to meet the Saintsgo pies 3 wrote:this may be way too early to ask, but if we do win next week, as do hawthorn, are we on the same or different side to them? i.e. could we come up against them again before a grand final providing both teams kept winning?

Death By Kicking
As my arse points to the ground I have coached enough footy in my life to tell youse all that inaccurate kicking will always bring a great side undone during a do or die pressure finals situation. I don't care where we have finished on the ladder, this crisis and lack of discipline should have been sorted out well before now. Today proved once again we can get the wobbles when the pressure is on us. Putting Davis and Fraser in the side was a disgraceful act of disloyalty to the fans. These two are not finals players! I wanted to win today because I believe in pride factor and the club colours. The kicking crisis will be the death of us in a pressure final.
I love this club and I hold anyone in contempt who does not think it is worth fighting for.

thanks for that, here's hoping......and here's hoping even more so, that we improve to the point that we would smash st kilda or hawks if we meet them in prelim

So Lyon claims the Saints backed off...
I've calmed down now and perhaps...the Pies did too...

I don't like the idea of going into the finals after a loss. I was hoping for some form, some solid evidence that the team was gelling again after that excellent game against the Cats, but instead we've had a couple of struggling games.
My biggest concern is Jolly's nose and head.
A couple of the inclusions were obviously underdone, but at least they'll make nice swaps for BJ and Dids. Not sure what's going to happen with Presti, maybe back for the prelim, stopping Hall shouldn't be too hard.
How good was Blair, Im in man-love.
Jols too, good game, good goals.
Dawes, fantastic presence and pressure.
Cloke was strong, though not his usual force.
Thought Thomas was pretty ordinary from the regular players. JMac/Fraser, same ole same ole. I also am not sure what's going on with Heater.. playing more wing, but he just seems... ordinary.
Worst thing though was that the VFL side is out, can't keep our depth game-fresh.
Bring on the doggies.

Season Stars Now - Pre match pies v Bulldogs
We are all disappointed in todays loss, but we shouldnt be, Beams kick meant nothing. I didnt think we played that bad, Cloke and Dawes looked very good, Swan getting back to his best
Im sure Pies, Cats, Saints will all be 100% up and firing next week.
I see Didak, Brown, Johnson coming in next week for McCaffer and Fraysher.
The last couple of weeks, Cats, Saints, Bulldogs and Pies have not been there best, Geelong were even with West oastat half time, Saints get belted by Adelaide who lost to us and Bulldogs losing to Sydney and having an average win over bombers.
We finished first and play the depleted bulldogs. The prelim is 3 weeks away, we should have a full squad by then.
The last 5 weeks if i was a bookie id have Pies and Cats at $2.50, Saints at $5 and bulldogs at $10.
It will be a Cats Pies grandfinal and that could go either way.
We played 22 and finished first, all that means is we get a slight advantage of a 7 day break and playing the 4th best side. We are in the box seat. History means nothing. Season starts now.

Always disappointing to lose, but thought that it was a great hit out.
Losing now gets the monkey off the back, so we don't have to worry about when the winning streak will end and will it be in the grannie?
Poor kicking in the first half but straightened up after half time. Had them beat when Swannie kicked that goal and suspect that we put the cue in the rack then.
Still Beams should have kicked that goal, although can somebody tell me why he had a Dennis Lillee run up to have that shot?
Also what about Jolly's attempt to mark at the top of the square when he had his nose bloodied? Copped an elbow in the face, shouldn't that be considered hign contact and a free?
Perspective though, St.kilda lost, Geelong struggled against West Coast and even the doggies only won by 5 goals against essendon. maybe we should install Freo and sydney as flag favourites if we are placing so much weight on Round 22.

I could have sworn Beamer got the free 35 out but yea he was starting his run up almost from the edge of the centre square.
And I'm sure it was a FIST to Jolly's nose not an elbow. I remember a one Chris Grant missing out on a brownlow for a similar incident!
Never disperse your focus unless absolutely necessary. Face one adversary at a time!

And Jason Cloke got a week for putting Tyson Lane to sleep in 2002.1eyedpie wrote:And I'm sure it was a FIST to Jolly's nose not an elbow. I remember a one Chris Grant missing out on a brownlow for a similar incident!
Bet this one gets ignored for reckless/careless contact, or whatever Kangaroo Court wish to fabricate this week.
