I'm not overly concerned with the loss nor with the margin. We were simply outplayed by a quality team who wanted to prove a point that we didn't need to make.

The boys seem to have played this whole season on autopilot. Now they're playing for keeps and I think we're about to witness something special.

Forget about tonight, the sun will come up tomorrow and then the real season starts!

My concern is how the mindset will be when we next play the cats. I understand the game was a dead rubber and some players might have been cruising but after being 50 pts down at half time I thought they might have shown some pride in the 2nd half. We needed to have a dip,a bit of mongrel even if we didn't make any inroads at all. We gave in and that's what irks me.
If you are under a heavy training load in order to reach a peak in the next three week it's not worth killing yourself to try and rescue a game that is beyond rescuing. The boys had no spark or run ... flat as a tack always second to the ball. Don't worry we will be switched on in the finals and their going to be real physical encounters. 8) Look back at what was written tonight in three weeks time it will look different!

MM is right. Not worried after hearing his presser.

Basically he said, halfway through the second quarter, we realised we're getting beaten badly. Which is not good. But then, whats the incentive to bust a ball trying to get back in the game?

So we let them run away with it and we put the cue in the rack early. Big deal.

Real stuff starts next week.

Should we be worried we always have more pages dedicated to a loss than a win?

One year, my team was UNDEFEATED until the final two rounds, with no chance of being toppled from top spot. Self preserveation mode sinks in, and it's hard to explain. We got SMASHED by the BOTTOM team at home by about 100 points, then lost convincingly the next week to the second placed team on the eve of the finals.

We went on to beat that same team convincingly the next week, and won the premiership by 90+ points.

It CAN be switched on when finals commence.

Just relax, people...
AGREED, some pieces of footy history that i can recall too-

1968, Moorabbin, final round, saints v cats ( i was there, a young lad), the saints smashed the cats by heaps, played them the very next week in the finals, same teams, cats smashed saints, sam newman best on ground.

1980- Tigers lose final game to swans badly, they won the flag.

1990- Pies get destroyed by hawks late in season, we win the flag.

2010- Pies lose last game to hawks, we win the flag.
And i am sure there are many other examples. Every game is different, and footy is a very high percentage psychological, if you are not switched on mentally, as we werent, you lose. That wont happen again.

Premierships are won by the best team in the finals , the finals start next week.

Even realistic Geelong supporters know that beating top of the ladder Collingwood by 96 points in round 24 means nothing.

Just like our last 24 weeks mean nothing unless we win the Premiership.

It is / was the smelling salts of a game that will smother all external club distractions and focus us 100% on the first of our challengers in the finals , West Coast.

It's a pity there are so many dead rubbers these days, but I genuinely forgot this game was even on tonight.

Which is a kind of ironic statement when you check out the context within which it was delivered. I mean seriously dude (and I use that term with every last skerrick of my poetic license) but get a grip. You're embarrassing us to the interwebs.

jack_spain wrote: No wonder so many people have been driven away from Nick's when ****wit bullies come on and tell us what we should think and say about Collingwood every time.
LOL. Just so much LOL. I'll even dust off a ROFL. A post every 75 minutes 24 hours a day presumably isn't ramming opinions down our throats.

You weren't the happiest person in Melbourne when we won last year. It was my birthday and I was off my chops.

Regardless, if or when we win it this year, I expect there to be a glib retraction on your behalf followed by arrogance and grandstanding at other teams' misfortunes, not realising that you are again setting yourself up for how you're feeling now. Then we can go through this whole thing again. Believe me, it's as cathartic for me as it clearly is for you :P
Thanks Geek, what a truly wonderful post!

I actually think he wants us to lose so he can go on about it for the next ten years

2001 I think ... Essendon lost convincingly to the Tigers. The Bombers finished on top. The next week, Essendon destroyed the Tigers in the final. I was at my club's after-training function one night, and Robert Shaw basically told us in no uncertain terms that Essendon tanked to let Richmond think they had them. This was on the eve of our finals campaign after we 'tanked' before our premiership.

Relax, peeps. Sheesh.

In the words of ANNODAM

We were SHIT

We'll see how the next 4 weeks play out. If we win the flag, this will be seen as the dead rubber. If we lose, especially if we faio to beat Geelong, then yes, they have worked us out.

Our game plan yesterday was bizarre - using the centre corridor too much and at no stage did we push players back into D50.

''Half way through the second quarter we were being beaten badly and really there wasn't a yelp, but what have you got invested? What is the net outcome of now busting a boiler and trying to fight back?'' Malthouse asked.

''I'm not saying that is right, wrong or indifferent;.......
Read into that what you like....what I see is we shut up shop very early and went into preservation mode....

Sure we could have dropped 8 players like Hawthorn did, but we are not Hawthorn...and that is something I am very happy about.

I think this was just the week for getting things out of the way. Leign Brown's retirement anouncement, Thomas' re-signing, a couple of hours of circle work at the 'G.

You don't have to like seeing the team lose by so much (and you don't have to stay when it isn't enjoyable) but it scarcely matters in the scheme of things.

I have seen worse losses in the final round when the team was looking to the finals - eg, the 1981 loss at home to Fitzroy in the final match (Collingwood managed 4 goals that day). That one cost us a flag because the 'Pies lost top spot on percentage - back when it really mattered.

This just spoilt an evening. They won't play like that again this year.
