Day one riding completed.
Left from the MCG at 6.45 on buses
2 suitcases about 10kg in each (the limit required)
Bike boxed. Bikes went into a truck an bags under the bus.
Got to Robe about 2.15pm
Lined up to get allocated packs with Jersey’s, name & numbered tags for luggage and bike and ride guide info
Lined up for tags for the tent and luggage (there’s an option to pay a bit more & they supply a tent and mattress)
Found an erected tent, put luggage in.
Located bike box & assembled the bike along with 1000’s of others
Headed into town and had a breakfast/ lunch at 4pm
Tent sleep was OK
Caught up with people I’d met from previous rides in QLD and elsewhere
About 3-4000 people
Today:
85 km ride mostly flat from Robe to Millicent with a lunchstop in Beachport. Sat having my lunch watching the turquoise like water slowly lap the shore with a huge sea-lion basking in the sun: I can relate to that

Tonight at the nightly briefing we were introduced to a woman in her ? late 70’s. This is her 33rd great vic bike ride!
There’s a liquorice all sorts: fat people, skinny people, old people, young people, volunteers , flash riders, novices, road bikes, commuting bikes, mountain bikes, carbon bikes, e bikes...the lot. Fast riders, slow riders etc. It’s a highly supportive environment.
Lot’s of fun.

Day 3 done. 110.5 km’s from Mt Gambier to Portland. A long ride, a few hills.
Got up at 4:50, showers aren’t available in the mornings so I get my huge enamel bowl, put cold water in it and add boiling water: there’s boiling water available for tea & coffee from 5:45-10pm. I use this to wash my face & feel fresh for the ride. I don’t eat breakfast but 2 bottles of water and a cup of tea.
I was out by 6:15: not too many gone by then. On the positive side of the ledger there’s little traffic, little wind and you get to see wildlife when ur in the middle if nowhere. Today I saw emus, wallabies and kangaroos.
Beautiful sounds of birds and various forms of flora. There seems to be a lot of self-seeded poppy flowers / plants on the route especially out of Mt Gambier. Very pretty.
We’re camped along the foreshore. Unfortunately, the stand-up tent section is at least a km from the main marquee area. There are few showers available & despite arriving early I always help out unloading the luggage which quite a few of us do. However when it’s time to shower there’s a ridiculously long queue. Further away again is a pier & on the other side of the pier is a beach and a smelly toilet block with external showers. So I went in for a dip in the freezing water with my bike shorts on: not long enough for dealing with lactic acid then as it transpired the outside showers were solar heated

If you can do a DP yourself with 2 female riders you are truly gifted.watt price tully wrote:DP
I'm so glad you're enjoying this, I'd only do it at gunpoint and probably would have reached the "%$^ it, just shoot me" point well before now
Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down.

Really tough day today, really tough. Portland to Port Fairy.
Rain, hail, sleet, squall like winds, semi trailers going past & wind and wet. The last 20km’s of todays 85 were continual wind gusts of over 50 km’s per hour. F*cking hard.
I rode the last 20 km’s with a woman from Warragul who was slightly built but a great rider.
To make matters worse I didn’t eat till I finished. That was a mistake as I was really hurting all over. My hands and arms were in an involuntary tremor for a few minutes. I quickly downed a banana and the packed chicken caeser salad that was for lunch. I recovered quickly, went into town and had a big breakfast. Came back and helped unload a truck of bags, found a tent and crashed for a couple of hours.
Port Fairy currently is very windy. Tomorrow is a rest day thanks be the lord
