Danny Roach is one of Noel Judkins selections wasn't he? Not Hine's?MagpieBat wrote:The Danny Roach selection! What the Hell was Derek Hine thinking?!sixpoints wrote:2005 National Draft.

But seriously, of all the selections in his 8 years as recruitment manager, this one has got to be Dekka's finest. Undoubtedly, Scott Pendlebury is the best player to walk into this football club since 1994, when a young bloke called Nathan Buckley pulled on our jumper for the first time. And up there with the very best to have ever played for Collingwood.
Congratulations, Scott. Here's to another 150 quality games (and hopefully a few more premierships to go with them)!

^ What I was getting at is that Pendles was a selection out of the blue, picked with a top 10 selection when others were projected to be taken before him. And certainly not projected to be taken by Collingwood. That's what I meant when I called him "the Danny Roach selection".
Sorry for not making that clearer, my fault. And yeah, Roach was Judkins' pick at no. 7 in 1999...

I didn't try to give a breakdown of Ellis' strengths and weaknesses, KM, just pointed out in the interests of fair play that injuries have curtailed him from becoming the player he could have been, and that based on his efforts on the big stage (28 possessions in a GF) he probably goes alright. Then I spoke about Scott Pendlebury. But that's OK; thanks for reminding me again why it's a waste of breath my posting here.King Monkey wrote:2005 draftees playing 150. Geez, where have the past 8 years gone?...........
And Ellis doesn't win his own football.Pied Piper wrote:Xavier Ellis is injury prone. The best we ever saw of him was the 2008 Grand Final, which is a fair measure of his capabilities. He's skinny, but so were Kevin Bartlett and Michael Tuck, who played a few games between them. No recruiter can truly know how much luck a player will have. Chris Judd had dodgy shoulders; Joel Selwood a bung knee. Who wouldn't have taken them at number one in hindsight?
Back to the topic at hand. The first time I saw Scott Pendlebury, he had so much more time than anyone else he reminded me of James Hird. I kept that opinion to myself at the time, for obvious reasons. He's a very special player and, barring disaster, his durability should see him chalk up another 150 games, no sweat. He'll certainly be our next captain and I pray he'll have the honour of lifting our next Premiership Cup - unless, of course, Nick Maxwell gets to do it a second time in September!

This is a fascinating thread back from 2005 when Pendles was drafted. There seems to be a mix of responses. A lot of people are doubtful about Pendles, but seem to realise that he has the potential to be a star.
It's great thread to look at after all these years.

You are a real uppetty smart arse aren't you Pied Piper??
It's a shame nobody else on this forum, or possibly on this planet, has an intellect as high as yours.........
Was actually just adding to your thoughts about Xavier Ellis - not disputing, agreeing, disagreeing.
It is a great win for the Collingwood Football Club to have the likes of Dale Thomas and Scott Pendlebury on it's playing list, rather than the likes of Xavier Ellis.
Lighten up fella..............

Ha! That's a good one. Am I right in assuming that "Eddie Gold" from that thread is EddieSmith these days? Can't get much more wrong than he was.Jezza wrote:This is a fascinating thread back from 2005 when Pendles was drafted. There seems to be a mix of responses. Congrats to Pendles, who's taken over the mantle of my favourite player ever. We're so lucky to watch him every week.

^ Hmm. That's a tricky one to work out. As far as I can tell, one coach must have voted as follows:
5. Hodge
4. ?
3. ?
2. Stratton
1. Shiels
And the other:
5. Hodge
4. ?
3. Stratton
2. Franklin
1. ?
Which means that two of Birchall, Cloke and Gibson got 4 and one got a 3 and a 1. Considering it's hard to believe that either coach would have failed to give Cloke a vote for his 5 goal game, I'm going to guess that it's as follows:
Buckley:
5. Hodge
4. Birchall/Gibson
3. Cloke
2. Stratton
1. Shiels
Clarkson:
5. Hodge
4. Birchall/Gibson
3. Stratton
2. Franklin
1. Cloke
5. Hodge
4. ?
3. ?
2. Stratton
1. Shiels
And the other:
5. Hodge
4. ?
3. Stratton
2. Franklin
1. ?
