I think it would be utterly fantastic for the CS to lead the Magpie supporters in a rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone". Neither Liverpool FC nor any other team "own" the song; it has merely become synonomous with them because Gerry and The Pacemakers recorded it back in the Sixties.
I think it would be terrific if the CS not only sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" but a few more. Over the years, I've done it myself. I have taken, for example, Rangers' and Spurs' songs and written my own words to bits of them and would be happy to pass them on. Actually, one of them is the text under this post - sing it to the tune of the chorus from "John Brown's Body". It's my adaption of the Spurs' supporters song.
We may never reach the heights of the soccer supporters, but that's because it's something they work hard on and have worked on for decades. But we have to start somewhere.
I'm all for it.

"CHORUS"
Glory, Glory to the Magpies
Glory, Glory to the Magpies
Glory, Glory to the Magpies
We are the Pies Cheersquad!
When speaking of the champions
One stands above the rest
Of glories old and records proud
When often put to test
Of fine traditions, history
That others cannot best
They wear the Black and White
"REPEAT CHORUS"
We mauled the Richmond Tigers
Crashed the Bommers from the north
The Lions and the Crows were next
Were crushed with mighty force
We humbled Western Bulldogs
And the Swannies in due course
We wear the Black and White
"REPEAT CHORUS"
We plucked the Hawthorn Hawks
Belted Carlton in the Blue
The West Coast Eagle tried to hunt,
But then was conqured too
The greatest name in any game
Within Australia grew
We wear the Black and White
"REPEAT CHORUS"
Along Came North Melbourne,
followed by the hopeless Saints,
They all came down to Viccy Park,
Where they were promptly shot
There will only ever be one team
That we all will support
We wear the Black and White!
For those who dont know, the tune is Glory Glory Halijula (pardon the spelling!) and it an 'adjustment' of the South Sydney Rabbitohs song.
My adaption of the Glasgow Rangers club song, "Follow, Follow":
Though The Streets Be Broad Or Narrow
Then Follow We Will, Follow We Will, Follow We Will
Though The Streets Be Broad Or Narrow
Then Follow We Will, We Will Follow In The Footsteps Of Our Team
[Chorus]
Follow, Follow, We Will Follow Collingwood
Everywhere, Anywhere, We Will Follow On
Sydney, Adelaide, even up to Brisbane
Should They Go To Dublin We Will Follow On
For There's Not A Team Like Collingwood
No Not One, And There Never Shall Be One
Carlton Know All About Coming Last
We Will Play Till The Day Is Done
For There's Not A Team Like Collingwood
No Not One, And There Never Shall Be One
[Chorus]
Follow, Follow, We Will Follow Collingwood
Everywhere, Anywhere, We Will Follow On
Sydney, Adelaide, even up to Brisbane
Should They Go To Dublin We Will Follow On
I'm trying to locate a copy of the original being sung and will add it if I can find it (I've asked a mate in Glasgow if he can help me locate it). I'm no musician, so have no idea if there's an original tune it was based upon to help.
I've left the "Dublin" reference in. The original, second verse, line 3 reads: "Celtic Know All About Their Troubles", so there's a bit of sectarianism involved (Glasgow Celtic being their arch rivals - largely Catholic and wearing green & white (Ireland's colours) hooped jerseys; Rangers being traditionally Protestant). The Dublin reference means that Rangers fans would even travel into the largely Catholic Irish Republic to support the team. However, in this instance, I'm intending it simply as a reference to how far we would travel to watch Collingwood, having also changed the reference to Celtic and the "Troubles", the Catholic/Protestant warfare, so as to try to avoid any possibility it could be misinterpreted.
Glory Glory Good Old Collingwood, Glory Glory Hallelujah,
Collingwood's The Greatest Team The World Has Ever Seen,
And The 'Pies Go Marching On (in Black and White Stripes Forever!).
For those who don't know them, the lyrics to "You'll Never Walk Alone":
When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of the storm
Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on, through the wind,
Walk on, through the rain,
Tho your dreams be tossed
And blown.
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never, ever walk alone.
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never, ever walk alone.
To add to my earlier comment that no-one "owns" this song. It is actually very much a song for Collingwood.
If you think about it, "dreams tossed and blown" is an apt metaphor for our Premiership dreams often being blown away, "hope in your heart" is an apt description of Collingwood supporters themselves, the eternal optimists who think we'll win the next one, and we've long thought ourselves one family ie "you'll never walk alone". Right from that very first day I ever went to a match, from the day I first set eyes on Vic Park, I've only ever had to mention that I barrack for Collingwood and I'm an instant mate to any other Collingwood supporter.
I had a dream of my own the last two GF's that I could somehow persuade supporters around me to sing one of the adaptions I'd penned. I even thought about printing up a stack of leaflets with the lyrics on them, then running through the tune half-a-dozen times just to get 'em warmed up, but never thought I could pull it off. I just didn't think the average supporter in the outer would go along with it. But if the CS got it started, I think everyone would join in eventually.
I think it would be the most marvellous sight/sound ever, to see 50,000 Collingwood supporters, scarves raised high, singing something that would rip the guts out of the supporters of any other side. We're a bit fragmented at normal home-and-away matches ie we're spread all over the ground, so maybe save it up for a final, when we're all sitting a lot closer together?
Finally, just in case anyone thinks some folk in the CS might be a wee bit nervous or shy about joining in, why not record it on a tape then turn the tape on nice and loud so people could join in unobtrusively?
