I think we should be unique, so I don't mean this to sound like we should be copying anyone else, BUT I do think the English really have a handle on how to sing at the football. They sing loudly and fairly slowly and it just sounds fantastic.
I think we should definitely try and keep this idea going as just the thought of hearing 20,000 (and hopefully a lot more) Collingwood people all bellowing out our song, and possibly others, before and during the game gives me goosebumps!

joffa, you tried your best mate there was no way I could have made it into the city by 11.30, that's why I didn't offer to give out the leaflets. but, I was on the second deck above you guys and, as someone else pointed out, people did join in the singing, but there was far too much clapping. what would have helped was an announcement that coordinated the whole thing; unfortunately, the MCG not the club controls such things. I kind of know how you feel, it's a major disappointment. I always thought it was a great idea so I was certainly singing along (or trying to), and there were plenty of leaflets in the social club before the game. but, it just wasn't to be. don't stop trying though mate!

Well, the MCG is OUR home ground, so it wouldn't be out of the question to have use of the scoreboard before the game - right?
If it were prompted at first, the idea would be a lot more successful, and could start a tradition against interstate teams.
p.s. Up in the magpie members, the song was pretty loud. The MCG is not known for its acoustics.

I was sitting in the Great Southern Stand and I think a lot of people did not know about the singing. Traditions are not made overnight, maybe if we keep at it, the rest of the crowd will eventually wise up and join in. It was a bit like when they played Never Walk Alone, I thought it was great, we should play it for all of our home games and it will really take off.

I also sat above the cheersquad on level one (Hi again MargOZ!) and was disappointed with the outcome. While I think it would work with some practice, both MargOZ and I thought that the Collingwood (clap clap clap) chant immediately afterwards was louder, had more effect and would be easier for everyone to do.
Well I tried... and thanks to everyone else who contributed, because for me it made the lead up to the game more exciting just thinking about what we might be able to achieve. To those who didn't help (not because they couldn't, like Broadie) I can tell you it feels great to know you are helping the club out - maybe you'll try it sometime.

I was on the top deck of Southern Stand on the 50 metre line and tried my best. There were a few of us giving it a go. You guys were sensational. It was great how heaps for the Squad when down on the boundary line and we could hear you guys from up there. I think it was also shown on the Big Screen. Good effort and keep your spirits up.

joffa, margoz and others.
a while back i mentioned that we should try and adopt "You'll Never Walk Alone" as another club song. I posted it on the Collingwood forum. I agree with most people on this thread, that these things take time. "You'll Never Walk Alone" took about 10 years to become Liverpool's tradition.
With persistence, this WILL work. just sing it at the same time every match (just without the clapping), it will take off eventually. There isn't it reason why this cannot, or shouldn't be done, so just do. I will be joning the cheer squad (hopefully next season) with a couple of mates (when year 12 is all over...). Not only that, I went to the Adelaide game (worth it). From what i have seen every match this year (bar port adelaide) the cheer squad and surrounding fans are very vocal, but this could be expanded.
The best way to make this work is to just do it, and show other magpie fans (are they real fans?) why they should get up on their feet and stretch their vocal cords. It will work, just give it time.....
and remember, patience is a virtue

The Liverpool theme song of "Youll Never Walk Alone" is one of the greatest in sport. The reason it hacome like that is that everyone in the ground joins in the singing of the song prior to game. In order to achive this here you need the song playing before the game on the scoreboard similar to a game earlier this year. You also need to make the crowd aware and invite participation in the singing of the song.
