Welcome to the Paul Medhurst 2007 thread.
Hopefully Medhurst will continue the tradition of successful acquisitions from Fremantle.
Medhurst was taken at pick 56 in the 2001 draft, two ahead of Dane Swan.
He was a Rising Star nominee in his first game of AFL football in round 1 of the 2002 season where he kicked 3 goals against the WCE.In 5 seasons at the Dockers, Medhurst played 99 games for a return of 166 goals. However, he only managed 12 games in the 2006 season. He stands at 178 cm and weighs 86 kg.
To be honest, I do not know much about him as watching Freo games was not high on my agenda.I always seemed to get him and Haselby mixed up. So I ventured over to their fansite,Dockerland, to get the inside information on our new recruit.
They referred to him as GHD.....Goal Hungry Dwarf. The general consensus seemed to be that he was being "coached " out of the game by Connelly. The Medhurst supporters felt he wasn't allowed to play his normal free flowing game, while the Medhurst haters thought he was selfish and a loose cannon. Many thought he had lost his confidence throughout 06 and with Farmer playing well he was frozen out of the side.
Post the Tarrant trade, most Docker supporters that posted on the site thought that they got the raw end of the deal. Many seemed genuinely sorry to see him go with messages of good luck but wish you weren't playing for Collingwood. Why does that not surprise me.
The reason I chose Medhurst was that I would not be prejudiced in my opinion of him before a ball was bounced this season. With Didak's injury,I expect him to be in the starting 22 from round 1.
Each game I'll put up a little summary with stats etc.Johnno and others who get along to training sessions, feel free to post on how Medhurst is going in training.
First priority fellow Nicksters is to come up with an original nickname for him.

I am hoping for the best for Medhurst this year, there's no doubt he will have a few people on his back each time he makes a mistake this season. I am also looking forward to seeing what he can do for us, as well as looking forward to your reports, Yarra Falls End.

Cheers Molloymagic.
For the record,Medhurst's stats for the game were 7 kicks 2 handballs 4 marks (not sure if it included that gutsy mark that was called to play on for not travelling the 15m) for 1 goal 1 behind.
In my opinion a solid debut in a game where Collingwood was obviously experimenting with a new look forward set up.Lazy attempt at goal with his first kick for the pies but it is only February after all.Looked comfortable with his set shot for goal and contested well.
I expect him to line up against the roos in round 1.

Would have liked to have seen him play mid field. Showed some determination and is willing to go searching for the ball.
