True, but they had one thing on us. Roids.sq3 wrote:Cam - YES - exactly correct.
Lethal must have modeled his Brisbane Lions teams of 2001, 2002 and 2003 on the 1990 Pies.
I still think the 1990 Pies would have beaten the Lions as Ned would have KO'd Brown in the first 10 minutes.
Barge or Ronnie would have killed Lynch, Leppitsch and Mal.
No Contest.

Cam some of your assessments are damming Shaw was one of the most hardest working, couragerous players during that era sure he wasn't skilled but he never stopped trying unlike so many blokes running around today. Francis was the same and his aggro was a good thing if only we could bottle it and put it in Lonie and O'bree's soup at night. Francis had a great left foot and love to split a pack and for a little bloke was very accurate.

Through the 80s there were many disappointing years, years when we bombed out in crucial games, went boom-boom in final series, got thrashed by record margins. My synopsis is purely a speculative look at how level-headed non-collingwood supporters may have viewed our list, and for good reason, pre-1990.
I am not for one minute trying to diminish that fantastic year, where everything clicked, our guts and glory on the last day something myself and my 2 brothers watched before each Grand Final we played in order to steel ourselves for what was required.
As for Daicos, he was my idol, I tried to play just like him (as many on here no doubt did), had his number on my jumper (after taking off Billy Picken's 2 and replacing it with a 3) which i have recently got my little bloke wearing (despite the fact it was a long sleeve jumper which is now sleeveless courtesy of my good-1983-tailor self.
My whole point is that people can make history regardless of circumstances. I would not surprise me if we won the flag this year with Lokan and Williams kicking 4 each (that will please some). If nothing else 2002 showed us what is possible with a committed bunch. How do you think Lynch felt when Barge kicked a bag on him and we smashed the roy boys? I'm sure he gained great satisfaction every time the lion machine made a mess of us. Hopefully we can return the favour, starting this year.

Sounds a bit to me like 2003. Everything was clicking, we were the best team in the league that year (or at least until the last Saturday of September) but not the team with the best players (if you know what I mean). Just like 1990. Maybe it will happen this year...maybe not...Cam wrote:I am not for one minute trying to diminish that fantastic year, where everything clicked, our guts and glory on the last day something myself and my 2 brothers watched before each Grand Final we played in order to steel ourselves for what was required.
Wouldn't it be fantastic to have Tony Francis at the moment?? Add some much needed grunt at the moment.

This may be a controversial topic but im interested in opinions.
With the talk of Buckley retiring his captaincy late last year, Josh Frasers name popped up as the likely successor. This shocked me as I thought Josh's 2004 was below standard. The ruck department was a big weakness in our side and we were unable to obtain first possession around the clearences.
I no Josh has put in the hard yards in the gym and is doing all he can to gain muscle, however his body is still not big enough to match the likes of King, Everitt, Darcy, Keating etc. He gets outpositioned every time he goes up for a contest. When will he start putting on the weight? Our new hope is Guy Richards, who had a promising 2004, however he too is "skinnyish" and will probably be outmuscled in the ruck. Richards seems to be a very good back up ruckman. However it is probably to soon to comment as he is early in his development. Fraser however has had a few years at the club and should be ready to peak this year.
His obvious benefit is his agility for a big man. Good vertical leap and has good speed. He has proved to be a handy forward and at times a match winner, however not on a regular enough basis for mine.
I still see our ruck division as our weakness in 2005, hopefully richards continues his development. Possibly now with the new ruck rules which will be introduced, it may suit josh as there is a shorter run up and josh has a good vertical leap. He had such big raps about him when he was the number 1 draft pick, i dont think he has reached the heights we hav expected. But i am probably judging too early, hopefully the muscle will come and the fact he has shouldered the weight of the ruck may serve him good as he matures into a senior player.
Id like to hear some opinions on Josh and am happy to take criticsm about my views. He definately has the ability to take us to a grand final. I am been hard on him because its make or break time for our club and we need a big year from josh so our ruck department can hold up and allow our classy midfielders first use of the ball.

Josh is a terrific player, and could be a future captain, but not if he plays in the ruck. For whatever reason (it could be part of the losing strategy) he takes his eyes off the ball at centre bounces, and this hardly inspires the others as a captain needs to. His best work is at CHF, and unfortunately, below the knees. He's got great skill, and guts, and that can inspire the others.
