Buckley's Press Conference:

That performance must frustrate you despite it being a brave effort?
Having no talls in the forward line contributed to the result?"It goes down as an L but a very different looking one, but it's still the same letter. There's a contrast between that performance and last week. I suppose I it's our challenge to keep producing that and not round 1. It showed a lot of pluck, a lot of endeavour and discipline through the game. We sort of had it on our terms for the most part, but it just opened up late".
How's Tim Broomhead doing?"We were too tall last week apparently, and we were too small this week so in the end it's a balance of each. It's really not about how tall or small you are, but how it blends together with the ball use, and I thought that was better. We were more adventurous with the ball, in the back half in particular. We were prepared to bounce a little bit more. It did tell when our legs ran out and we couldn't break the lines as much and we were looking for that aerial presence, as we were not able to bring the ball to ground often enough. I thought we did it well through the 3rd quarter, but in the end we were not able to bring it ground often enough. I don't know how many marks they took from our kicks going inside our forward 50 in the last quarter but it would have been double than what we would have seen for the rest of the game I would have thought".
What sort of impact did Broomhead's injury have on the playing group?"He has a clean break of both the tibia and fibula, up high. He will have surgery tomorrow, but it's terrible luck for a young bloke who is still trying to prove himself and still trying to make his way in the game. He got an opportunity, but you don't take the field thinking you will walk off like that, but unfortunately it's happened".
What's the early word on Darcy Moore?"Obviously, Broomhead is a well-loved and well-respected member of our footy club, so it impacts, so there's no doubt it impacts. Brodie Grundy is one of his best mates, so I thought he really responded this week after last week's performance. The very next ruck contest he attacked really well, so you could see he was responding positively from the situation as much as he could. It has an effect because you feel for the bloke. We have genuine care and empathy for each other".
Will you quickly back up for Friday night?"So, Darcy tightened the hammy. When it cooled down at half time he was not right to continue. so we will assess that when the dust settles. When you don't finish your game you're in some doubt aren't you"
Will Ben Reid be able to play next Friday?"Six and half days, seven days. We will deal with whatever it is. I think we've got a 12 [day break] and a 4 [day break] coming up so we'll get a look at different breaks, but we'll handle that".
There's reports that Kayle Kirby collapsed in the VFL practice match this afternoon?"Well, he very nearly got up [today], but clearly we had to pull him out late, but we think he'll be right to go and Cox will be available so we've got some decisions to make on how we structure up. We'll have a few soldiers ready to come in".
I suppose the new challenge next week is to back up that intensity?"Our VFL doctor was over there. It was a collapse so it was not a contact injury, so the details are still coming to light. It was some form of irregularity in his heartbeat, but he's at the hospital and apparently stable, but apart from that there's no real information to share with you. I think the game was stopped for 40 minutes over there, so it was relatively serious, but as I said, talking to the doc that was all the information they had that he's going okay at the moment. So, we'll clearly give you more information when that comes to light".
Big efforts in the back half as well, under siege at various stages. How pleased were you with Scharenberg, Phillips, Murray and etc?"It always is, Pete. As I said to the players, it's always the same result in terms of win and loss, but you have a very different feeling about the effort that was brought to the table and the application to what we want to do for longer. There were more elements of our game that were better, but we could still be a lot cleaner with ground level and cleaner with the ball in hand. There's still massive improvement on that and we need to find it, but that needs to be a minimum standard for us going forward".
The video cuts off at the end, so I didn't get the last part of what the coach was saying in answering the final question."We had a lot of boys that actually responded. Grundy as we mentioned. Tommy Phillips, Tommy Langdon. Guys that actually stood up and took another step, so that was encouraging. In the second half, Phillips ended up playing basically the last half without rotation, and it happens because it has to happen at times. James Aish..."

In part I'll have to disagree with you. If that's what you truly think, lets pretend this isn't Collingwood at all and substitute the team name for StKilda - 27 wooden spoons right there. We are supposed to be the greatest sporting club in the land but in truth we're anything but. I think a fair few of us demonstrate our loyalty and undying commitment to the black and white by not jumping ship and paying for their memberships year after year even though the club has shown almost zero loyalty back - as for unquestioned support, I'm a conservative not a socialist - I'll never jump ship but its healthy to question questionable actions i.e one mans promise to another over the the needs and care of the many - Eddie has betrayed our club, understand it.. own it.PyreneesPie wrote:Well you see TBWCW, winning flags is not what it's all about me. The Club and its supporters deserve better.
Why do the supporters deserve better? What's so special about them, compared to say a Carlton/Melbourne/Saints/ Bombers supporter etc??? What makes Collingwood supporters more deserving than anyone else, other than an undying commitment to the black and white ?
To my mind, before anyone thinks they deserve some nebulous something, they need to demonstrate their loyalty and unquestioned support. Yeah, an old-fashioned concept I know

I watched the game again as I do for some weird reason and there's a couple things that really stick out
Firstly we lacked that final bit of class whether it be in front of goal or forward 50 entry. We couldn't get the ball into the hands of Sidey or Pendles often enough making those entires but when we did we didn't hit the scoreboard as we should of. Add Wells to those 2 it looks better. Add Moore Elliott Faz Cox Reid in the mix as forwards and we likely take more marks and kick more goals but alas we didn't have them
Our back 6 did a good job most of the day. Early in the match Scharenberg was our intercept mark and we used him mostly coming out of trouble. Late in the game we sent Howe forward a we needed someone to mark but it left a hole in defence leaving Langdon play deep and he got caught out a couple times (not the kids fault)
They just had to many quality entires late were our defenders were trying to be attacking more to bridge the narrow gap but when we turned it over they went bang bang bang goal.
Losing Broomy hurt as he was another set of legs to run chase harass. We run out of puff at the end and that is what's going to happen when your a grunt team who has to over work to be that constant harassing side
I don't think we can play that level of intensity every week. We've tried in the past but sooner or later that effort takes a toll.
I thought Buckley actually coached pretty well yesterday. He made changes during the game switching things up and making them adjust to us more than us adjust to them.
At times we saw Pendles Trelaor Sidey all play FF we mixed our small forward around and forced them to change.
We don't have the depth in playing talent to have Wells Elliott Faz Reid Moore Cox all not available to our forward line. Crocker tries hard but he's hardly in the same league as Elliott or Faz.
Grundy was awesome. Late in the 4th term they showed his stats for the day he was going at 92% eff as a big man with 8 clearances as well. He second third forth efforts are unbelievable. He's our barometer when he's on and firing so are we
I'm a bit flabbergasted at the press conference when Buckley was asked about Murray and Scharenberg and immediately switched the conversation to Phillips and Langdon. Murray made some errors but his run and lone breaking made us much more dangerous. Scharenberg just oozes class and has the time when he gets the ball to make good decisions along with his reading of the game. He sees things unfolding upfield and gets to the contest where the ball is going a trait a few of our defenders don't including Langdon more often than not. Buckley had the chance to really pump the tyres up on new club recruit and a guy who's battled back from 3 serious injuries yet he chose to deflect the attention to guys who were lucky to hold there places after round 1
Puzzling really but it fits the coaching manner of Buckley
If your a favourite of his you get games when you shouldn't and praise when it's not earned.
Next week at the selection table we've got to see if Moore is right, is Wells & Elliott good to go, can Treloar actually run out a game, are Adams ribs right, can Reid play, is Dunn calf ok, can Brown's body gold up to another bashing ?
So many questions to be answered
The Suns showed the blue print to beat the blues today. We need to stretch there defence with a couple big strong talls. Cox will have to play along with Reid you would think with WHE Thomas and a couple others
Defensively Curnow is the guy to stop.
We should have the midfield to beat there's quite easily really so things being equal we should register our first win but as we know this is Collingwood and anything is liable and likely to happen.

Buckley isn't much of a coach but at least he knows enough not to bag his 300-gamer who will be captain under the new coach.
Langdon is the best footballer in the back six by a considerable margin. What you see as him getting beaten in the contest and coughing up goals is actually him being the only one good enough to get to the contest, time and again, generally outnumbered and usually trying to pick up the pieces for someone else who has run to the wrong spot. Have a look again at Cameron's last goal and ask yourself where the rest of the back six were that Langdon is going up in a marking contest two on one against the CHF and FF. Sometimes great footballers like Tommy are made to look ordinary because they're surrounded by guys who can't read the play and have little appetite for the contest, or are so glacial in their movement they can't get to the contest at the required speed for AFL.

The question I've asked about this very question is WHY??? would you replace ben Reid with Broomhead??/when you have McLarty waiting in the wings?? I've seen some odd replies here about how they would"Let us down"??more times than not?? I'd direct your attention to the 18 year old Adelaide player who struts around like the chicken coop rooster and when needed in the end, stood up and took some huge marks and kicked a couple of goals.Just what we NEEDED.
