I just can't get over the fact that someone in our leadership group, a LEADER of our playing group, has been so public and so belligerent about his contract negotiations.

I thought leaders were supposed to set the examples for the rest of the team?

As it stands, Travis has come across as a mercenary, nothing more.

It's as far away from leadership as it gets IMO.

Paine reminds me of chad liddell so I will see how he goes in 2yrs time. We have had some promising big men who have departed the club with little impact. Cloke is gone but who knows, he may just surprise us all and stay. Highly doubtful I know. If he doesn't perform then he needs to be dropped.

Liddell was a chubby little runner (185cm 80kgs).. Paine is a key position with hands of iron (194cm 92kgs)

The stats don't lie.

Kicks: hasn't averaged this low since 2006.
Handballs: lowest average since 2006.
Disposals: lowest average since 2006.
Marks: lowest average since 2006.
Goals: lowest average since 2010 (which is odd..).
Tackles: lowest average since 2008.

So... why would we pay him more than any other player. He hasn't done himself any favours by playing terrible this year. Take a 1 year deal Trav and better luck next year.

I'd rather he bugger off now than go through the same crap next year.

Is it just me or does this remind anyone of 1996 when everyone thought a certain Nathan Buckley would leve the club and go to Port Power for big bucks????
I for one still belive the deal will get done we don't lose many players with Ed in charge.

Back off, Cloke critics warned

Post by E »

AFL Players Association chief Matt Finnis last night called on furious Collingwood supporters to lay off Travis Cloke, after they spat venomous messages across social media yesterday about the key forward's protracted contract negotiations.

The rebuke came as Collingwood president Eddie McGuire said the Magpies were turning their attention to rival talent.

The Magpies have put on hold discussions with Cloke's management - his father, David, and Ralph Carr - until the end of the season in a bid to ensure the club and player are not distracted heading into the finals. Carr is a former Carlton board member.

Collingwood supporters yesterday turned to social media and even planned to stage a rally outside the club's Olympic Park headquarters, directing their anger at Cloke, rather than the Magpies.

But although talk was tough across the internet and talkback radio, nobody attended the 5pm protest outside the Westpac Centre.

Collingwood cheer squad leader Jeff ''Joffa'' Corfe wrote on Twitter that the key forward would move to Carlton next season: ''So i am told he will be a blue next season..signed and done! Dont slam the door on the way out.''

Fremantle was the first club to make a play for Cloke, offering him a five-year deal worth $1 million a season. Fans yesterday questioned that figure, saying on current form he would be worth only $300,000 a season.

''Freo need to get whatever offer is out there OFF the table ASAP and throw the cash at [St Kilda's Brendon] Goddard instead,'' a Pies fan called dezezez wrote on sportal.com.au.

Some supporters even said they would boo Cloke at matches if the contract stalemate continues. Cloke was given Bronx cheers from Collingwood fans when he kicked his only goal against Hawthorn last Saturday.

Finnis said such bile would not be tolerated. ''I think that such a disrespectful, ill-considered approach won't be tolerated for very long by the broader, passionate Collingwood faithful, who would quite rightly condemn such behaviour as Travis takes to the field each week in pursuit of Collingwood success,'' he said last night.

Collingwood chief executive Gary Pert said it was the club's decision to put Cloke's contract negotiations on hold, and expected rival clubs to circle the power forward in the meantime, adding ''whatever clubs do is up to them''.

The Magpies will continue to work on re-contracting other players, including Sharrod Wellingham and Harry O'Brien.

Asked yesterday that by doing this it could hamper a deal with Cloke, McGuire said: ''That's one way of looking at it. Another way would say that we would have a lot of money to go after other people's players.

''You know what all the alternatives are. People aren't stupid. Work it out.''

Cloke's preference is for a five-year deal to stay with the Magpies, but it's understood he would be happy for four years if the money was right. The Magpies have offered $750,000 to $800,000 a season.

The speculation about Cloke's future appears to have affected his form. He has a modest 35 goals in 16 matches but still leads the AFL in contested marks.

Despite the frustration over the contractual delay, McGuire said Cloke was a much-loved figure at the club. ''We want Travis. Maybe it's been affecting him in recent times. We want him to concentrate on footy,'' he said on Triple M.

''He is super-respected around the club. We want him to do the right thing. We believe the best way at the moment is just to put it aside and let's get on with playing footy. Take all the heat out of it and let's just worry about season 2012.''

Carlton has expressed interest in Cloke if talks with the Magpies break down.

Richmond football department boss Craig Cameron says the Tigers are ''duty-bound'' to make contact with Cloke if his dealings with the Magpies become ''irreparable''.

But McGuire said he had already spoken with Tigers president Gary March, who told him the Tigers would not pursue Cloke. ''He said, 'No, not interested in that. We are going to bring our own players through and not blow our salary-cap up'.''

Makes us look like a pack of petulant tossers as supporters, the kid hasn't gone anywhere yet and we've turned on him as if he was John Elliot in the flesh.

Makes no difference where he wanted to be.

I see a lot of people accusing Cloke of being selfish

He is looking after number one.

Nathan was looking after number one in his desires.

So was Luke Ball, Jolly and Tarrant.

Go blame the salary cap... go blame the club for not meeting the supporters demands.
