Meanwhile, here are the results of the question "who is the most universally loved player in the AFL?" in this year's Herald sun survey.....

You can add McDonald-Tipunwiti to that list. He's a cult figure at the Bombers and people love to watch him play. This issue was not and is not about race.

People conveniently forget that Goodes "race shamed" a 12 year old girl and had her banned from attending footy. It appears politics was more important than educating a little girl. Does anyone know what happened to her - poor kid?

Goodes did not try to shame her. That was herald sun propaganda. The day after the incident, Adam Goodes called a press conference where he declared publicly that this young girl should not be singled out, as the issue of racism was not about her (God Forbid, a 13 year old girl!), but was an issue systemic in Australian society. The HS ignored Goodes' public statement, and insisted hysterically that Goodes had singled out and demonised a 13 year old kid. Put yourself in Goodes' position: he hears someone call him an ape, he is totally fed up with comments such as this,(no doubt he has heard millions of them) and decides to call it out. and immediately points at the source of it. He would not have had time, in that split instant, to assess who was responsible for it.
When he finds out it was a kid, he goes public in a media conference the next day, and declares that this girl is not to blame, it is the entire society that creates the conditions where such comments can arise in young children. But all in vain. He is now in Andrew Bolt's firing line. Adam Goodes is now transformed by Bolt and the HS propaganda machine, into a bully, who pays out on 13 year old kids, destroys their lives, all apparently for his own aggrandisement. Nowhere do we find any mention in Bolt/s diatribes, of the conditions experienced by Adam Goodes in his childhood, the incredible deprivation and social hardship that he had to endure, as an Aboriginal youth, fighting for his only chance of success in Australian society: sporting glory.
The public was no doubt influenced by the Herald Sun propaganda campaign, and falsely believed that Adam Goodes set out deliberately to destroy the reputation of a 13 year old girl. Hence the uncontrolled booing, which became in itself a social frenzy, driven by Herald Sun and Murdoch press hysteria.
AFL fans were then conveniently demonised as well as racist by media outlets of the so called "liberal" media (Fairfax etc). These fans were not, for the most part, racist at all. They had just been influenced by the Herald Sun campaign, in the absence of any alternative interpretation of the events. Fairfax (The Age, SMH, etc) were simply the other side of the Murdoch coin. Together, they worked together to totally falsify reality, and portray Adam Goodes as a "bully". How ironic. Adam Goodes was driven out of the game, forced to retire before his time, because of the incredible wave of social bullying that was unleashed against him, due to the media.

After watching the documentary, I though the post-screening analysis led by Waleed Aly, was very interesting. The booing of Adam Goodes was such a multi-faceted debacle. It was very gratifying though for Waleed to devote a segment to the role of the media in it. I agree MTTM - it was shameful how certain elements of the media added so much fuel to the public hysteria.

What also concerns me greatly is the way ordinary people are led by the media and by each other - the "sheep" mentality. This was also in evidence with the Essendon supporters on Anzac Day this year. Mob mentality is so totally ugly.

Booing had nothing to do with Racism

MTTM - That is the most insightful and well articulated reflection on this issue that I’ve read. Bravo!

PP - totally agree. Mob mentality seems to ensnare so many in a trance-like state. Then, as they come to, individuals find they have to frantically justify what they’ve done, even though in many cases they really don’t themselves understand why they’ve done it. This confusion makes people angry and defensive.

DTM - I haven’t yet seen the doco, but I’d be shocked and disappointed if the thesis is in any way that Eddie and Collingwood are the problem... Racism, however, really is, although I think MTTM’s comments explain how probable it is that many booers didn’t realise the sentiment they were proliferating.
