It showed how badly we need strong midfielders, so JDG back in and Taranto for Grundy makes us a far stronger side than keeping the status quo. Plus gives us a decent bit of salary cap relief to afford the upgrade of Nick Daicos next year.
Hard to believe after yesterday you still think we are a better team this year without Grundy in the side. Taranto is only being looked at as a possible JDG replacement and Nick signed an initial 4 year contract
9-2 without him
3-3 with him

Yeah such a better side with Grundy…

^Well thats clearly not a certain fact until later in the year, but for what its worth I have heard whispers that we are having trouble finding a suitor....if indeed there ever was a potential suitor.

Nope, looks like this albatross of a contract is ours to bear...may we never forget the lesson it should teach the Club.

^GWS not interested?

^ No, it's a wind up, Presti35. There are 17 teams that would replace their ruckman in an instant, if he were available. Well, 18, really - since I guess we'd have to replace our ruckman, too.

^^^^

I would have thought that the problem wouldn’t have been lack of interest in Grundy per say but a lack of interest in taking over his current contract.

Wright has performed an old skool press leak

If there’s a genuine external interest in Grundy, he will be traded.

Unlikely this year, But….

Which raises the question of who replaces Grundy? Stick with the Cameron/Cox combo. Or look at one of the free agent rucks for coverage?

Was just looking at this... Ryder wouldnt have much left at all. Goldstein may be good for another year, but sheesh is 34. McEvoy is just about done. NicNat at 32 is just about done too. Not the worst idea I've heard, but then again, who replaces a top ruckman with a banged up ruckman, even if for just one year?

Remember when we brought in Hudson for a season? Would we say Stefan Martin was a success/good idea for the Dogs?

Contract aside, I think trading BG wouldn't be great for the club.

We have Cameron and Cox, both of whom are performing admirably in Grundy’s absence. And we have Begg in the 2’s.

As good as Grundy is, no one is ‘untradeable’.

If the genuine interest comes with them buying his full contract and giving us two first-round draft picks, that's possibly acceptable. Thor is still the best ruckman in the competition and one of our three best footballers - we don't need to be conducting a fire sale. While posters on here are whining about the cost and length of Grundy's contract, Melbourne are steadily re-signing a whole lot of their players to high-value 6-year deals. Since we got rid of the guy who used to take Grundy's hitouts and run to the back pocket with them, we don't need to be conducting fire sales of any of our handful of top players.

It’s not a fire sale.

Wright has leaked a Grundy trade possibility to explore external interest, and to put our club in the best possible situation for the Daicos era.

It’s a smart move, we need to get used to it.

It is a good point. In the unlikely event Grundy was to move on, we would need another ruckman. Something a little more damaging than a part time ruckman / forward, a 21 year old undersized ruckman and a 32 year old American who first touched a footy about seven years ago.
Maybe Tom Hickey would consider a fifth club ?
Probably the best solution is to not allow Grundy to go anywhere … for 2023 at least. Whatever the noise is now, I’m sure the press will regurgitate the story every year as long as he remains at the Pies anyway.

Cameron was a steal, another Hine recruiting win that no one mentions.

Cox may well play for another 3-5 years. He’s still fresh and It’s not uncommon for specialists to march on in the states. He’s an Ozzy now and fully committed.

We have no shortage of Ruck options. What we need is a mature bodied key position player at both ends of the ground.

We’re getting McStay for exactly that reason,

Wright MONEYBALL gold.
