I have 4 nights in Darwin booked for next month. I'll be fully vaccinated before then and I plan to enjoy myself, touch wood.

So the UK has officially become a science experiment. BoJo has removed all restrictions, backing the vaccine to do it's job.

The removal of restrictions is not particularly unique and has occurred in plenty of other countries, including the United States.

But what makes Monday’s announcement so significant is that this will be the first time any major country tests what happens when unrestricted community transmission meets widespread vaccination coverage.

And they do have pretty good coverage

Nearly 86 per cent of all adults in the UK have received one dose and 64 per cent the maximum protection of two.

Starting their rollout at a time when 1000 people were dying on average each day is a good way to get buy in and population density (55+ Million people in an area smaller than Victoria) makes the logistics pretty easy.

It also helps that they're just prepared to accept that some people will die.

the public’s understanding of death has matured since last year. Many now realise the vaccines will not prevent every death from COVID-19 but are reassured they will stop the vast majority. There is also greater awareness of how many have died from missed cancer diagnoses or suicides stemming from lockdown.

The world will be watching because this is supposed to be the way forward, living with the virus. I'd be morbidly curious as to what sort of daily death rate would make them back off and go back into a lockdown, but for their sake I'd rather not find out.
