If you're that concerned about our potential 'abuse of power', just delete all your PM's, let us know when you've done that and we'll remove your PM rights. Job done!Tess wrote:Yes the Mods can read em, or at least those with Admin powers can if they feel a need to use those powers, we can only trust them not to abuse their power.

I'm not sure why you think that you're so knowledgeable about this system Tess; you're obviously not and consequently that statement is pure crap! What a surprise!Tess wrote:Private Messages.... amazing things they are hey Steve(wpw).

I'm the only one who could read PMs... and do you know what I would have to do to do it?
I would have to log into the server via a console and interrogate the database directly.
I would then have to open the table containing the private messages, then find the fields containing the message ID, the message text, the sender's ID and the receiver's ID and record that information somewhere.
I would then have to open the table containing the user information and match the sender's ID against a username so that I know who sent the PM.
I would then have match the receiver's ID against a username so that I know who the PM was sent to.
I would then have to open the table containing the thread information and match the message ID against a thread ID so that I could work out which messages belonged together.
Then, keeping all that information in mind and in some sort of sequence I would have to repeat it for every PM in a thread if I wanted to eavesdrop on that discussion.
If my head is not spinning by that stage, keep in mind that hundreds of PMs are sent using this system every day.
For those of you worried about me reading your PMs: most of the time I have trouble getting to read my own messages, let alone going through all that malarky to read yours as well. And why would I do it anyway? Just to find out who said what about who or who thinks that the moderation here stinks? I hate to be the one to break it to you, but you're not that important and I've got better and more profitable things to do with my time thanks.
There is no facility in the Bulletin Board software that can be used by any moderator or administrator of any level to read private messages belonging to other people. I can only do it because I have access to the server outside the bulletin board system at console level. No-one else has that access. If you want a conspiracy look elsewhere.

I only know of about 3 forum hosts that have the ability to log PM's one is iPBFree v.2.1, Forumco, and there's apparently a hack for VBulletin for you to do so there...from what I have read in the past.
I only know of iPBFree v.2.1 and Forumco because I am an admin at forums hosted by them and have noticed in the ADMIN CP that it's possible.
I really don't care if someone reads mine (if it was at all possible anyway.) none of them are that exciting and to be honest you'd be best served reading something else.

Someone did, on page 2 of this thread, but don't let that get in the way of a bleat.

I liked the initial response I prepared but the moderation team didn't go for it!
Cheers
Glad Mike cleared things up enough for everyoneAll PM's sent by any member of Nicks Bulletin Board are forwarded to the each moderators personal email address and all PM's containing Threats of Violence, Of a Sexual Nature or Pm's that contain what might be considered to contain any illegal dealings are then put up on the Secret Sinister Bastards Forum for all moderators to laugh at and ridicule before being forwarded, along with the PM's ip address to the Federal Police for futher investigation. Hope this clears things up.
Cheers
