Interesting call on Bontempelli at 6. Has him listed as 191cm but the AFL site says 194. My thought was that at that height he'd be more likely to play as a KPP (I don't know of a permanent mid of that height in the comp), but everyone says that he has elite endurance and very good skills. At that height, pace, agility and in close ball winning ability will be the key as to whether he makes it as a mid. Could be a very exciting prospect.swoop42 wrote:Snoop Dog's 2013 phantom draft:

I like the sound of Lennon as a more outside mid or half forward. I wonder whether we'd go with two mids in this draft or look for one more developing KPP (don't have too mnay at the moment). If the latter McCarthy could be a chance, or Bontempelli if we see him as a potential KPP down the track.
Well done boys!

For those interested, there is a clip of the match the AFL AIS team played earlier this year against an AFL European team in England available on the internet.
While still only a sample of one game it shows many of these names playing against men.
I like Bontempelli because he
- has the height which allows him, like Pendles, to lift the ball above opponents and dish off. Flexible too. You see him have a stint in the ruck in that game and spoiling down back, snapping a goal too
- has good kicking penetration
- is younger than most and has a bit more room to develop incl physically
I'd suggest maybe Lewis Taylor might be an option for us at 10 like Supercoach Paige initially pegged. Quick, good skills, but many will lament the fact he is a midget.
Scharenberg was named best, but while impressive, I wonder about some of his upside given he is such a mature body already. Help him stand out amongst kids. He has a good turn of pace though and pretty good skills.
Lennon also stands out with his physicality and was named second best.
Interestingly too
Boyd does little
Billings, known for his poise and X factor, tends to butcher it a bit in this game. I reckon he could be the draft slider amongst the chosen 5. Not sure what is really so special about him to be honest.

One team, one dream - the Pies and this year's premiership
A lot seem to think GWS will take Kelly at pick 2 but I was under the impression they thought they already had to many midfielders of his type on there list.
I expect like Snoop that they'll take Scharenberg with pick 2 though it wouldn't surprise if they went for Bontempelli in somewhat of a shock decision.
I'd be happy to get McCarthy, though with Moore available to us next year not sure if we'll take a genuine kp prospect this draft in preference over a top 10 midfielder/flanker.
I guess it all comes down to how highly Hine rates McCarthy as we all know quality talls are harder to come by and where we think Bontempelli (should he make his way to us) will end up playing a few years into the future.

We have committed to taking Kelly via the rookie draft should no one take him in the national draft.MOTR wrote:Bit worried about him lasting considering the shallowness of the draft.5150 wrote:Have we committed to Jake Kelly (father/son)? If so what pick?
