If he is gone, as I suspect, then it will be a lesson to him and his manager, for playing hardball and demanding such a massive contract from Collingwood. Other players (hopefully including JDG) will also realise that they put their Collingwood careers at risk if they secure monster contracts. Premiership era teams achieve greatness by getting everyone to sacrifice a little for the greater team cause.

I watched the clip…. Did I miss something?

All he did was say that players talk to clubs all over Australia and that GW is talking to his manager.

Or was there more?

Reports that Collingwood has contacted Adelaide about the availability of Billy Frampton, who is yet to be offered another contract by Adelaide, makes me think that Grundy's days at the club are numbered.

Not sure if its a "lesson". Maybe the guy is ruthless and went for top dollar and doesn't mind so much where he gets it from. If that's true then things will turn out just as he had hoped (getting paid the total $$ he is entitled to).

Lets be honest, if he wanted to stay he could - simple as that. All he would have to do is say "we have a contract, and I will front up and play so you need to honour your side".

I will, however, accept your point if it indeed was true that he loves Collingwood and desperately wants to stay and couldn't imagine playing anywhere else. So perhaps the a better lesson would have been for someone like Treloar - who really didn't want to go, and maybe its true for someone like Maynard??.

In my opinion I dont think that is the case for Grundy however.

It takes two to tango. Collingwood was stupid to give him a seven year contract. A three year contract at the money he was seeking was enough. I don't know now who did it. Was it Geoff Walsh or Graham Wright?

If Collingwood goes all the way to a flag this year, or close enough, you’d think players would look at Geelong’s dynasty and the pay cuts they took which led to multiple flags.

I’m also inclined to think Grundy is “ gonski “ but for a different reason other than Flys neutral comments.
I can’t remember a player whose name has been “ linked “ to so many clubs and all with strong reasons as to why they would be interested. Dees, GWS, Port, Crows, Cats and now Hawks have all been linked to him.
It only takes two to see him as a solution to their list management and all of sudden what may have been $300,000 paid, becomes $200,000 or what might have been a pick in the mid teens, becomes five picks further up the draft order.
I actually don’t see Collingwood losing from whatever outcome unfolds. Either he stays because the club doesn’t think the trade options are good enough or he goes because the club have identified they can do more with what comes in as compared to what goes out.
Both the club and Grundy will have to come to a mutual decision much sooner than later. ( DeGoey is in a similar boat ) There’s a lot of meetings and conversations required in trading players out of and into a club.
Any Grundy trade is significant, so the magnitude of the outcome is going to involve a lot of possible options coming back the other way. Will likely be Collingwoods most active and busiest trade period for many years.

800,000 k to an extra $200k what do they want to be remembered for? do they have no love of the game? do premierships mean nothing?

how good would it be if Jordys manager fronted and said, ok, put the offer on the table, including the clauses, yes hes worth $800k if he keeps his nose clean, imagine what that would do to team spirit right now?

grundy hasnt really played all year, i still think under Fly he would be a different player, as they all are, but if he wants to be an ass, seeya.

im really really over the pampered players that lead such a charmed life, playing sport, adulation, way more than enough dollars, they had it much better than us locked up 5klm 2 hours of daylight a day commoners for the last 2 years, life is not just about money. as much as i hate the cats, for some reason players take cuts to stay there.

I don't blame Grundy at all. This situation is the result of the club agreeing to such a monster contract in the first place.

FWIW, I don't think our club will agree to a similar contract with any player ever again. Players, especially really good ones, certainly deserve to be very well paid, but given footy is a team sport, no individual's contract should negatively impact the ability of the club to build a Premiership winning team.

Graham Wright had no involvement with Grundy's contract. On the contrary, he has to deal with it!
