Interesting to see Jack back in the side after a blinder in defense last week. Its not like the Eagles have a blistering attack that we need him to quell, nor do they have a rock solid or small backline that Jack could expose.
I actually think they see Jack as a possible opponent for Reiwoldt in the future (in 3 weeks and the finals) and we need to get some AFL level game time and defensive assignments into him before the big job on Nick R.
The Eagles offer some opportunities for that experience. The big Q, Quentin Lynch, provides the "Strength Test" that Reiwoldt would pose, and Kennedy provides the "Speed Test" that Reiwoldt also poses.
Just a theory with no basis in fact.
Cheers

Looked as if these three were fighting for the one spot - now they're all in the team . Will be interesting to see which of them survive for finals.swoop42 wrote:The Anthony inclusion is a minor surprise but has undoubted talent and with him impressing in a return to defence last weekend we may have found a way to fit him and Dawes in the same 22 using him as a swingman.

I would be shocked if Leon doesnt fire up for this game, as you say he loves playing the Eagles and its in his favourite environment, under the roof, should have a cracker, if he cant play a great game this week then it should be goodbye Leon for goodMonco Matt wrote:I balls to bones believe that Leon will awaken for this game. The Eagles historically have been his bunny and he is well overdue for a 5 bagger. C'mon Leon, time for some magic.
^I've flip flopped on the issue of whether we could fit all of Cloke, Dawes and Anthony in the 22 as forwards and still are unsure but when you look at Geelong a forward line of Mooney, Podsiadly and the 189cm Johnson isn't all dissimilar.
If Anthony can improve his fitness during the remainder of the season playing further upfield or in defence then it might still be workable especially if Medhurst continues to struggle for form.

I'm not convinced of the triumvirate of Dawes, Cloke and Anthony, but I guess we'll know a bit more after Saturday night. Certainly when Medhurst and Dick are available they provide better options. It's great to see a couple f new faces in Blair and Rounds pressing for selection. Good times ahead I reckon.

Not sure we'll know much more after Saturday. A good performance by any of our big men against a team like the Eagles won't carry much weight. It's against the Cats and Saints they all tend to struggle. And in those games, having 3, or even 4 with L.Brown in as well, is a massive risk to take.
Anthony is good enough to play at AFL level, and I'm glad to see him getting another opportunity. We are still looking for our best 22, and it's against the lower teams that we can afford to experiment a little. If we find a way to play all of Anthony, Cloke, Dawes and L.Brown together, great! But I don't see it happening, and think at most three of these fit into our best team, and even then only if L.Brown plays as second ruck.

Very glad to see the jack attack back, and yes, i for one do think a forward line of dawes, cloke and jack will work, with the little guys buzzing around them, that is one hell of a headache forward line, if all the guys are in form, for any opposing coach to match up on. Honestly,we can wallop the wet toast by twelve goals easing up, and we should too, percentage may come in very handy. Big win woods, big win.!!

Jack is too good to be playing VFL. Dawes and Cloke is our best CHF/FF combination.
Leaves Jack to play the 3rd tall/flanker role working up the ground. I am suspect of his ability once the ball hits the deck. If he can improve his skills in this area then I definitely like the set-up of all 3 playing forward. All you want is 2 goals a game from Jack, operating from the goals square up to the wing.
If Jack plays this role well, I can't see Medhurst getting back in to the team. If Jack struggles, Medhurst will be given another go.
On another note, the talk of "resting" players for this game or other games against Richmond or whoever is arrogant. We "rested" players against the Dees on Queen's Birthday and were lucky to escape with a draw. No resting from here until October - best team plays every week.

It's nto a bad move from Malthouse.
The Eagles defence is is tatters...jack will play forward. He'll probably go back a bit as well...perhaps rotate with Reid or Goldsack.
I'm not overly concerned about playing the 3 talls up there because the Eagles have little run out of defence...and their greatest weapon Shannon Hurn is out...so clearing 50 is going to be a tough ask.
I think we'll see Trav take the best defender the Eagles have, and run him up the field, leaving their defence really exposed.
