AFL reeks of hypocrisy, as Tom Elliott, who has no love for the Pies, just now pointed out, the bloody AFL site itself, has the story about Jaydens penalty, but right above it, SAME PAGE, MIND YOU, HAS AN AD PROMOTING GAMBLING IN ALL ITS GLORY. AND, he reminds us that Andrew Gaaff who smashed a yoiung guys face in, KOd him, broke his jaw, knocked out some of his teeth, got bloody EIGHT WEEKS ONLY, yet Stephenson gets hit for a low bet. Now, whats worse, breaking a kids jaw, knocking his teeth out, or betting a few dollars ????

Hmmmm.... interesting from Nick Dal Santo on Fox Sports:

Santo, a three-time All-Australian, concedes he is a sceptic of Stephenson’s self-reporting timeline and doubts whether the AFL had been entirely transparent.

Santo suggested it was a strange set of circumstances after Stephenson self-reported on May 19, considering the AFL normally have wind of unusual betting circumstance.

The "mistake" Stevo made, it seems, was to self-report. Chances are he may well have got away with it, as the many others out there have so far. How many will be forthcoming now with this massive whack? Certainly none of those that have bet more than $36 or bet on more than 3 occasions!!!

Understand your and others angst, but you are confounding apples with oranges. Betting advertising/sponsorship, breaking jaws etc has nothing to do with this.

It's like this, Stephenson in full knowledge he was in breach of the rules went ahead and placed bets on his own team in AFL games. He has admitted today that he knew it was wrong. He got caught.

So he gets what he deserves. The reality is that he's a confessed cheat. Dress it up any way you like it, that's what he is.

He's got off lightly IMO with just an effective 10 week ban.

The self-reporting because he was feeling guilty (and invoking mum & dad) is just plain is BS in my view. The Australian Crime Commission monitors all betting accounts of players in the major codes. Not sure whether Vic Pol does as well. But the betting agencies themselves keep tabs on who's betting on what and report it into the AFL if they detect anything suspicious.

I suspect that someone in the know has tipped of Collingwood that its got a problem. Or someone in the know has threatened to expose Stephenson - so he has 'self-reported' to get in first with the guilty conscience sob story. That, at least, is where the journos will investigate and take this story from here.

Yep, anything is possible. Especially if his mate (or has a mate) supports another team!!

Just finished looking at the video of his press conference and the feeling I got is he's still just a boy!!! His bewildered facial expressions say that even he doesn't understand what made him do it!

Geez, the expectations we place on all these kids as AFL footballers is incredible. They may have the physical skills to do what we demand of them, but their brains are still physiologically immature and so, psychologically they are also still so immature. Makes me feel a bit sad really.

As others have said,he probably would have got away with it if he hadn’t dobbed himself in.It seems that he got friends to place two bets for himself,and then used someone else’s account to place the other bet.So it’s highly unlikely he would have got caught if he hadn’t put himself in.I wonder how many of us would put ourselves in under those circumstances,knowing the flak and the embarrassment you would cop if you did so?i don’t think I would have to be honest.So the kid was probably too honest for his own good in the end.I’m sure other players must be doing the same thing as he did,but don’t get caught because they don’t self report.

as a mother of 2 kids of similar age ill answer that,

He made the mistake of giving into peer pressure, or temptation,

let he who has no sin cast a stone.....anyone able to throw a pebble??

i doubt it.

Yes he will have to earn back trust and respect, but i taught my kids the same thing his parents did, you may cop it for doing the wrong thing, but if you lie about it, its going to be much much worse.

its called integrity.

You learn more form your mistakes than you ever will from your wins.

Declaring him a cheat is very harsh - yes, he broke the AFL rules, but can hardly be called cheating

You don't think the Crime Commission doesn't know who's associating with players, and watching them on CCTV at pubs and clubs when phone bets are placed.
